Science Sillabus

This document provides information for students about the science class being taught online by Sergio Blanco. It outlines expectations for online meetings through Zoom, including arriving on time, using proper names, being prepared and focused. It describes how grades will be calculated based on tests, assignments, and participation. Students should create a distraction-free environment and catch up on any missed work due to absences. The class will utilize Google Classroom and a virtual book, and students need a science notebook to take notes.

Science! With Sergio Blanco

Distance Learning (2020-2030)

Welcome to Science Class!

SCIENCE!!
Science tries to understand our world. Join me in a journey where we will learn the what, how and why
about –pretty much- everything.
This journey should be fun, because learning is fun. Bring with you your best attitude.

Expectations for the Science Class.

Zoom: We are going to have our class through zoom. If you like it, I am glad. If you do not like it, maybe
you can find comfort in the thought that I like it much less than you (my wish is to be able to go back to
normal classes).
Still, we are very fortunate to be able to have tools as powerful as zoom. Let’s use it properly and
efficiently.
General expectations are outlined in the general rules for 7 th and 8th grade, but let’s review them here.
General expectations during zoom meetings:
Arrive at the meeting on time.
Sign in with your first and last name (no nicknames)
Be prepared to work with all of your materials ready to go.
Stay on approved websites for the class activity.
Use appropriate and respectful language
Stay on task and focused on the class activity

It will be important that you are engaged in the class, we will talk later about the grades and how they
can be affected. Good advice to stay focused in the class is to create around you (if possible) the best
environment free of distractions. These are some good advice coming directly from Mrs. Jex-Lewis.

How to create a distraction free environment for the online meeting.

 If you have a phone, mute it and put it in another location out of sight.
 If possible, find a place that has some privacy.
 Keep focused on the lesson; do not open unnecessary tabs for entertainment or to work on other classes.
Grades
Go to Google Classroom to check your grades.  Grades will be updated every two weeks or less.  This
class uses the following grading scale:

A=90-100%        B=80-89%     C=70-79%    D=60-69%    F=below 60%

Grade calculation:
The grading scale is broken down in the following categories:
40% Tests + 30% Assignments + 30% Attendance and participation

Late assignments:
I will accept late assignments until the end of the current week, but
only to get a passing grade. Any student who wants to make up
some work missing after that week will need to contact me and get a
Late Assignment. Tests have special rules.
Reason for this is that most assignments should be completed during
class time or before the following class. Therefore if an assignment is not done when the next class
starts it will not have a purpose.
Tests:
Tests in my science class are always done with open notes. If you take notes (we will talk about this in
class), you can use them during tests. Students can use other resources too during tests (for example the
virtual book).
Tests will normally be assigned at the end of the week or with very precise due dates. After that due
date is reached a test grade of “0” (zero) will be assigned to that test. Reasoning is that I always review a
test with the students. I will not consider a test valid after reviewing the answers with the entire class.

Materials
- A science notebook. Keep your notes organized in a science notebook for fast checking.
- Writing device to write in said notebook.
(You do not need a book because we will be using a virtual book).

Absences
All assignments will be posted in Google Classroom. You will be responsible to catch up with any work
you missed. If there is a long absence check with me and we will make a plan for you to catch up.

General rules
The start of the academic year 2020-2021 has been very rocky. It is up to us to make the best of what we
have. Please try to stay positive and engaged.
- Adapt: we will need to make changes on the go.
- Be polite: this is a very general rule, but it is the best rule.
- Be positive: ++
