SERTICA - 7 Challenges in Technical Ship Management

This document identifies 7 challenges faced by shipping companies regarding technical ship management. The challenges discussed include: 1) Ensuring reliable data communication between ships and shore offices despite limited bandwidth. 2) Training crew to easily use software systems given their frequent movement to different locations. 3) Standardizing maintenance routines and control across varying ship fleets. 4) Providing prioritized task overviews to prevent missed deadlines. 5) Using analytics to drive desired safety and operational behaviors rather than relying solely on rules. 6) Integrating related processes like incident reporting across different software modules. 7) Providing centralized access to all ship data and functions from a single system. The document aims to help shipping companies overcome these challenges to improve ship performance.

7 challenges

management

WHITE PAPER
Freight rates are still low for most cargo, and
many shipping companies are facing difficul-
ty generating profit - or at least the profit mar-
gin they require. Not much can be done about
freight rates as they are a result of the world
market and the necessity to move cargo around.

However, shipping companies can ensure effi-

ciency in managing their ships by making sure
that the fleet comply with safety regulations and
is operated without breakdowns and deten-
tions. This way time schedules can be met and
customers stay satisfied.

This paper identifies 7 challenges faced by shipping
companies all over the world. The data is gathered by
observing many shipping companies using different
solutions, having different policies, procedures and
strategies. We provide a recipe of how to overcome
the challenges and thereby contribute to the overall
performance of the ships from the best practice seen
across companies.
Data communication between
