Module 4.5 Operations On Rational Expressions Part 2

This document provides instructions on how to perform addition and subtraction of rational expressions. It explains that you must first change fractions to have a common denominator before adding or subtracting them. For subtraction, the minus sign should be distributed to all terms after it. Examples are given of performing each operation on rational expressions with steps shown. Practice problems are then provided for students to work through.

MODULE 4.

5: Operations on Rational Expressions Part 2

Addition and Subtraction of Rational Expressions

1. If the rational expressions are dissimilar fractions (different

denominators), change each expression into similar fractions by
identifying the LCD (least common denominator).
2. After transforming each rational expression into its equivalent fraction
with similar denominator, perform the indicated operation.
3. Note that for subtraction, the minus sign should be distributed to all
terms of the expression after it.
4. Check for common factors. If there exists, simplify.

Examples – Perform the indicated operation:

3a 1
1. +
2 ab 4 a2
1 1
2. +
b−1 b+1
1 1
3. −
c+ 1 c −1
y 2
4. −
y−2 2 y
HOMEWORK – Perform the indicated operations:

a−1 d +1
1. +
abc bcd
b b+1
2. −
b−1 b
1 1 3
3. − + 2
a−1 a+1 a −1
