Things A Coach Should Know: Developing Positive Coaching Attitudes and Behaviours
A coach needs to know that his/her job is to help develop the athlete physically, emotionally
and technically. Therefore a coach needs to be someone who
a) Know much more than just the sport and its rules
b) Is patient and is a good communicator
c) Enjoy working with people
d) Is able to motivate the athlete
e) Is able to provide discipline and direction, (knowing when o reward and when to deny
the athlete some form of pleasure)
A coach plays many roles, among them are teacher, friend counsellor and to guide t he
athlete.
A coach also needs to be able to communicate effectively with officials, media, sponsors and
parents.
The coach is often the most important person to the athlete. The coach helps the
athlete grow and develop in the sport and personally, remember the athlete has his/her
reasons for participating. Success coaches know how to match the needs of the athlete
and objectives of the programme, thus the athlete participates fully and develop skills.
The coach needs to make the athlete feel good about themselves, they need to feel
they are accepted as people regardless of their sport performance.
