This standard has a long history dating back to 1898. Originally. local prorective
signaling sptems were covered in a general NFPA aandarb an ~ignafingsystem* but
thia material was rtparated tiam the other types of systems in 1964 as part of a pro-
gram designed ro simplify rhc guidance being offcrcd. The ciforrnancc and

recall for fire fighters' ~ervice,have been introduced in this edition of the standard.
