(d) 29 days and 12 hours
(e) Earth, moon
(f) 12 ½
(g) Communication satellites

(b) Sputnik 1
(c) Aryabhatta
(d) Yuri Gagarin
(e) Rakesh Sharma
(f) Kalpana Chawla
(g) Edwin Aldrin

(a) satellite
(b) natural
(c) craters
(d) 2
(e) phases
(f) Moon
(g) New
(h) weather and communication both ( multi-purpose satellite)

5. Answer the following questions:

Ans1) Yes, Moon is a natural satellite of the earth. Many planets in the solar
system have heavenly bodies revolving around them. These heavenly bodies are
called natural satellites and are generally referred to as moons. The earth has only
one natural satellite - the moon.

Ans 2) The surface of the moon is rough and uneven as it is made up of rocks.
There are tall mountains and deep craters on the moon's surface. Thick, dark grey
dust covers the surface of the moon.

Ans3) The moon has extremes of temperatures because the part of the moon where
the sun shines becomes extremely hot and the part that does not receive sunlight is
dark and very cold.

Ans4) The following factors make the life impossible on the moon -
a) The moon does not have air, water, and atmosphere.
b) There is no protection from the sun’s harmful rays on the moon due to the
absence of the atmosphere.
c) The moon also has extremes of temperatures.

Ans5) Due to the revolution of the moon around the earth, its position with respect
to the earth changes. So, the moon appears to change its shape. The day-to-day
changes in the shape of the moon as seen from the earth are called phases of the
moon. The various phases of the moon are –new moon, crescent moon, half moon,
gibbous moon, and full moon.

Ans 6) Tides are caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the moon. Due to this
gravitational pull, the level of water rises and goes down twice every day. The
regular rising and falling of the level of water in the sea or ocean is called tides.
The tides are of two types- high tides and low tides.
Ans 7) Partial solar eclipse- When only a part of the sun is hidden by the moon's
shadow it is called as partial solar eclipse.
Partial lunar eclipse - When the moon is partially hidden by the shadow of the
earth it is called as partial lunar eclipse.

Ans8) Draw the diagrams of solar and lunar eclipse from page 146 and 147.

Ans9) Few uses of artificial satellites are –

a) Weather satellites help to forecast weather.
b) Astronomical satellites help to observe space objects.
c) Communication satellites receive and reflect the radio and telephone waves.
d) Military satellites help in spying.
e) Navigation satellites help in navigation of ships, aircraft and even
spacecrafts.

Ans10)
Natural satellites Artificial satellites
Many planets in the solar system have The satellites that are designed and
heavenly bodies revolving around launched by the humans are called
them. These heavenly bodies are called artificial satellites for example Sputnik 1,
natural satellites. For example, the Aryabhatta etc.
moon is the natural satellite of the earth

Q6) HOTS:

(a) The moon shines both at night as well as day but we can see it only at night
because the bright rays of the sun during the day do not allow us to see it in
the daytime.
(b) Birds return to their nests at night when it gets dark. During solar eclipse, the
moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching the earth, making it dark for
some time. So due to darkness, the birds return to their nests.
(c) Astronauts must wear spacesuits whenever they leave a spacecraft. There is
no air to breathe and no air pressure on the surface of the moon. It is
extremely cold and filled with dangerous radiation. Without protection, an
astronaut would quickly die in space. Spacesuits are specially designed to
protect astronauts from the cold, radiation, and low pressure on the moon.
They also provide air to breathe due to oxygen cylinder attached to it.
Wearing a space suit allows an astronaut to survive and work in space.
Activities
Activity -1 ( pg 152)
(a) 29 days 12 hours
(b) She needs to carry oxygen cylinder because there is no oxygen or air on the
moon.
(c) A special suit will save her from the cold, radiations, and low air pressure on
the moon.
(d) 29 days 12 hours
(e) Stuti will feel lighter because moon’s gravity is 1/6th of the earth's gravity.

Fun time (pg 152)

(a) Mars
(b) Star
(c) Planet
(d) Space
(e) Moon
(f) Earth
(g) Sun
