Time : 90 Minutes Maximum : 60 marks
SECTION A — (5 × 2 = 10 marks)
Answer any FIVE questions.
1. What are inertial and non-inertial frames of reference?
2. Give two examples for the evidence of mass-energy equivalence.
3. Calculate the wavelength of the matter wave associated with the body of mass one
gram moving with a velocity of 6.625 km/s. Planck’s constant = 6.625 × 10 –34 JS.
4. Write the principle underlying electron microscope.
5. Write down the quantum operators for momentum, kinetic energy and the total
energy.
6. Give any three valid reasons for the failure of the classical theory.
7. Find the value of [ x , px ] .
8. Show that [ L , L ]  2h LZ .
9. What is meant by barrier penetration?
10. Discuss the significance of zero point energy of harmonic oscillator.

SECTION B — (4  5 = 20 marks)
Answer any FOUR questions.

11. (a) (i) Discuss time dilation. What is known as ‘proper time interval’.

minute in each hour?
Or
(b) Write a note on the following:

(i) position vector
(ii) kinetic energy
(iii) momentum and
(iv) total energy.
14. (a) Express the operators for angular momentum components Lx , Ly and Lz in
