By: Senator Benigno Aquino Sr.
Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. was assassinated in NAIA which was Manila International Airport before or MIA. The death of Ninoy provoked the Filipinos to protest against the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos and they successfully stopped the Marcos administration. Through the unity of people in the historic gathering in the Philippines which is called Edsa People Power Revolution where the hundred thousand Filipinos gathered and stood as one. Aquino was the first aspirant to ran as a president against the dictatorship of Marcos, but unfortunately, his ambition did not continue for the reason of Marcos proclaimed the Martial Law on September 21, 1972, which gives the power of the military to rule. When the Martial law started, Ninoy with thousands of political opposition, press, and militant students were arrested. Benigno denied the allegations but found out guilty and put to jail in seven years. He was temporarily discharged when Imelda Marcos allowed him to have his heart surgery in the United States, he stayed there for 3 years and it was the year 1983 on the 21st day of August when he decided to go back knowing that the situation of the Philippines was getting worse. While on his way home he was interviewed by the press inside the plane regarding the issue between him and the Marcoses. Aquino was ready to face and was not afraid of what lies ahead when he got home in his beloved country, for he believed that the Filipinos needs him because during that time Marcos controls everything even the media so there was no freedom of speech. Upon arriving at the Manila Airport, he was shoot and being killed by the unknown culprit which until now his case was still unsolved. Many lives suffered because of the Martial Law, there were human rights violations, widespread poverty, social inequity, and rural stagnation, and because of these, it leads to Aquino to stand on behalf of the Filipino people. He wants to be the voice of his fellow countrymen; he wants to change the government under the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos. His death was truly worth it because that was the time when the Filipinos became united and brave to protest against the Marcoses. Afterward, through the move of late president Cory Aquino wife of Benigno Simeon Aquino Jr. and the thousands of Filipinos who protested against the dictatorship of Marcos we have now the freedom of speech where we can freely express our opinions in different platforms. It is truly one of the remarkable moment happened in our country, the declaration of Martial Law, the People Power Revolution, and the death of Aquino was a history that will be remembered even if years will pass.
