SECTION-A
1. Write briefly :
a) What is Hooke’s Law?
b) Compare between solid and hollow shafts.
c) Define the term equivalent length. Discuss its uses.
d) What do you understand by pure bending?
e) Describe the effect of couple on SF and BM diagrams of a beam.
f) What are the various types of loads to which beams are subjected to?
g) Define Modulus of Elasticity.
h) Define the term equivalent length. Discuss its uses.
i) Define Polar modulus of the shaft section.
j) What do you mean by Anticlastic bending?

SECTION-B
2. A compound tube is made by shrinking a thin steel tube on a thin brass tube. As and Ab
are the cross sectional areas of steel and brass tubes and Es and Eb are the corresponding
values of Young’s Modulus. Show that for any tensile load the extension of the
compound tube is equal to that of a single tube of the same length and total cross
sectional area, but having a Young’s Modulus of (EsAs+EbAb)/(As+Ab)

3. A simply supported beam of rectangular section is 200 mm wide and 300 mm deep. It
supports a uniformly distributed load of 6kN/m over an effective span of 4m. Calculate
the magnitude and direction of the principal stresses at a point located 0.50m from the left
support and 50mm above the neutral axis.

4. Compare the section moduli of two beams of the same weight and length if the first beam
is a solid circular beam of diameter d and the second is a circular tube of outer diameter
D1 and inner diameter.
5. A round steel rod of diameter 15mm and length 2m is subjected to a gradually increasing
axial compressive load. Using Euler’s formula find the buckling load. Find also the
maximum lateral deflection corresponding to the buckling condition. Both ends of the rod
may be taken as hinged. Take E = 2.1 × l05 N/mm2 and the yield stress of steel
= 250 N/mm2.
6. A cylinder 250mm in diameter has a wall thickness of 5mm and is full of a fluid at
atmospheric pressure. Its ends are closed by rigid plates and an axial compressive force
of 80 kN is applied to the cylinder so that the pressure of the fluid rises by 90 kPa.
Calculate the bulk modulus of the fluid. Take the cylinder material E = 200kN/mm2 and
l/m = 0.25.

SECTION-C
7. A horizontal beam 10 m long carries a uniformly distributed load of 180 N/m and in
addition a concentrated load of 200 N at the left end. The beam is supported at two points
7 m apart, so chosen that each support carries half the total load. Draw shear force and
bending moment diagrams for the beam.
8. A horizontal girder of steel having uniform section is 14m long and is simply supported
at its ends. It carries concentrated loads of 120 kN and 80 kN at two points 3m and 4.5m
from the two ends respectively. I for the section of the girder is 16 × 108 mm4 and Es
=210 kN/mm2. Calculate the deflections of the girder at points under the two loads. Find
also the maximum deflection. Use Macaula’s method.
9. Derive the torsion equation and state various assumptions made in the theory of pure
torsion.

1. Write briefly :
a) Define fluid and distinguish between ideal and real fluids.
b) Distinguish between surface tension and capillarity.

e) State Buckingham’s Pi theorem.
f) Define Reynolds umber and Weber number.
g) How is turbulent motion classified?
h) State assumptions on which analysis of hydraulic jump is based upon.
i) What is meant by optimum shape of cross section of an open channel?
j) What are the limitations of Bernouli’s equation?

SECTION-B
2. A stationary bearing of length 30 cm and internal radius 8.025 cm has been used to
provide lateral stability to a 8 cm radius shaft rotating at a constant speed of 200
revolutions per minute. The space between shaft and bearing is filled with a lubricant
having viscosity 2.5 poise. Find the torque required to overcome the friction in bearing.
Take the velocity profile as linear.

3. The velocity components in x and y directions are given as :
u = 2xy3/3 – x2y and v = xy2 – 2yx3/3
Indicate whether the given velocity distribution is :
a) a possible field of flow
b) not a possible field of flow
4. A horizontal pipe of 5cm diameter conveys an oil of specific gravity 0.9 and dynamic
viscosity 0.8 kg/ms. Measurements indicate a pressure drop of 20 kN/m2 per meter of
pipe length traversed. Make calculations for the
a) Flow rate of oil and centre line velocity
b) Wall shear stress and frictional drag over 100m of pipe length
c) Power of pump required assuming an overall efficiency of 60%
d) The velocity and shear stress at 1cm from the pipe surface.
5. Calculate the friction drag on a plate 15 cm wide and 45 cm long placed longitudinally in
a stream of oil (sp. Gr. 0.925 and kinematic viscosity 0.9 stokes) flowing with a free
stream velocity of 6m per second. Also find the thickness of the boundary layer and shear
stress at the trailing edge.
6. A 3m wide rectangular channel conveys 7.5m3/s of water with a velocity of 5m/s. Is there
a condition for hydraulic jump to occur? If so, calculate the height, length and strength of
the jump. Also determine the loss of energy per kg of water.

SECTION-C
7. State and prove Pascal’s law and give some examples where this principle is applied?
8. A blower having an efficiency of 75% is to supply 14 cubic meter of air per minute to a
15 cm pipe under a pressure equivalent of 5 cm of water. If the 30 cm intake pipe drawn
directly from the atmosphere, what horsepower motor should be provided? What will be
the pressure intensity in the intake pipe? air = 1.284 kg.m3.
9. Two reservoirs are connected by a pipeline which is 15 cm in diameter for the first 5m
and 25 cm in diameter for the remaining 15m. Entry to and exit from the pipe is sharp
and the water surface in the upper reservoir is 7.5 m above that in the lower reservoir.
Represent the layout and tabulate the head losses by assuming that the friction coefficient
is 0.01 for both the pipes. Further calculate the flow rate through the arrangement and
draw the hydraulic gradient and energy gradient lines.

4. A vertical photograph is taken with a camera of focal length 350 mm from an elevation of
2500m above the ground. The terrain is nearly flat. What is the photo scale?
5. Explain the temporary adjustments of a theodolite.
6. Describe the procedure to determine the difference in elevation of the instrument station
and top of chimney if the base of the chimney is inaccessible.
