4 Definitions
Backwash: The procedure used to flush deposited solids out of the granular filter at the
end of the filter run. This normally involves feeding clean water in the base of the
granular bed and washing it in an upward direction.

Design Engineer: The Engineering Company responsible for specifying the design
requirements for ROS on the drawing sheet, in accordance with the requirements of this
specification.
Filter Medium: The term filter “media” is in common use to describe granular filtering
materials. Grammatically, it is plural and should apply to the bulk material to be installed
in several filters. (A single filter has a filter medium). To avoid ambiguity the term
“filtering material” used in the American Water Works Association (AWWA B100)
specification is preferred.
Packing layer: A granular material, coarser than the working filtering material, which
is not intended to capture suspended solids and neither, is it intended to move or be
fluidized during filter backwash.
Pretreatment: All the unit operations upstream of the reverse osmosis (RO) system
that have purpose to precondition RO feed water in order to meet the RO feed water
specifications.
Saudi Aramco Inspector: The person or company authorized by the Saudi Aramco
Inspection Department to inspect ROS to the requirements of this specification.
Silt Density Index (SDI): A measurement of the fouling capacity of water in Reverse
Osmosis systems. It measures the rate at which a 0.45 micron Millipore filter is
plugged when subjected to a constant water pressure of 206.8 kPa (30 psi).
5 General Requirements
5.1 The vendor shall be fully responsible for the performance of the system and for
each component in the system for a minimum of one year.
5.2 The skid shall support the total system for transportation to the field and shall
require only setting on a prepared deck or foundation. After making field
connections to prepared terminal points it should be ready for commissioning.
5.3 Each skid shall support complete subsystems (e.g., pretreatment system,
chemical cleaning system), requiring only skid-to-skid and terminal point
connections in the field.
5.4 The skid shall be fully automatic, including backwashing of all systems and
chemical injection. However, the membrane cleaning system shall be designed
for manual and automatic operation.

5.5 The vendor shall provide all the special tools for assembly, disassembly, and
unit maintenance, along with complete instructions for their use.
5.6 Provisions shall be made, where applicable, to prevent organic growth and
dehydration of membranes during shutdown.
6 Performance Guarantees
6.1 The water quality produced shall comply with the Saudi Aramco Environmental
Health Code (SAEHC-S-01) relating to quality of water intended for human
consumption.
6.2 The vendor shall guarantee that the membrane, when operated in accordance
with the instruction manual, will produce the specified product water flow rate
at the specified water quality for a minimum of three years from the date of
commissioning.
6.3 The vendor shall propose pretreatment chemicals (scale inhibitor, coagulant,
flocculent) approved by the membrane manufacturer and Consulting Services
Department of Saudi Aramco. These chemicals shall comply with applicable
health regulations and the vendor shall state the recommended and guaranteed
maximum dosage.
7 Design
The design of the RO skid shall be based on an accurate raw water analysis of water
samples taken from the actual feed water source provided by the proponent and checked
by the vendor. The analyses should be based on composite samples not on grab
samples. This analysis should include all the parameters shown in the technical data
sheet “water analysis” in the Appendix. Analyses for suspended solids (SS), pH,
alkalinity and gases should be performed at the point of sampling or alternatively
pressurized samples should be taken if analyses are to be carried out in the laboratory.
The membrane design configuration and performance should be determined on the basis
of computer projection programs. These projections should be within the membrane
manufacturers' design guidelines. Additionally, antiscalant projections should be
carried out to determine the required dosage of antiscalant for scaling prevention.
Copies of the output of these programs should be made available for review by CSD in
order to check that the optimum membrane configuration is being used as well as the
optimum antiscalant dosage.
The RO Skid Unit shall contain, but not necessarily be limited to, the following equipment:
