How To Write A Summary
How To Write A Summary
READING
1. FIRST READING: read the text quickly, trying to figure out its main topic.
2. SECOND READING: read the text once again and be sure you understand every
sentence. Look up on the dictionary any word that you don’t know.
ANALYSIS
1. HIGHLIGHTING MAJOR AREAS: divide the text into paragraphs and underline
the most important information in each paragraph
2. SYNTHESIS: write a one-sentence summary for each paragraph
PRODUCTION
1. INTRODUCTION: introduce your summary with a clear identification of the type
of work, title, author (if you know his name), and main theme in the present
tense.
Example: In the article "Drones," the author describes the different uses of drones
in everyday life.
2. BODY: summarize each paragraph that you previously outlined, and pay
attention to these points:
• The summary should cover the original text as a whole.
• The material should be presented in a neutral fashion (there’s no need
to express your opinion on the subject).
• The summary should be a condensed version of the material, presented
in your own words.
