Biography of Miguel Grau Seminario
Miguel Grau was born in Piura, in northern Peru, on July 27, 1834. His parents were Manuel
Grau and Maria Luisa Seminario.When he was 9 years old he worked in the merchant marine
and in 1853 he was part of the Navy. Four years later he helped to Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco
in the rebellion against the Liberal Ramon Castilla's Constitution .After that he was defeated ,
Miguel Grau returned to work in the merchant marine.
During the war against Spain , he fighted in the battle of Abtao (7-2-1866) where the Peruvian-
Chilean allies were victorius .In 1867 he married with a young woman form Lima , Dolores
Cavero with whom he had ten children.
In 1868 , he received command of the Huascar ship with which he stood out defending the
president -elected Manuel Pardo in 1872 and defeating the rebel Nicolas Pierola in 1874 . In
1876 , he was elected such us deputy For Paita.
In 1879 , when the war against Chile blowing up , he became in the highest commander of the
Peruvian squad . On May 21 ,1879 , in the battle of Iquique , his Huascar ship managed to sink
the Chilean ship Esmeralda.Unfortunately , that same day our ship was crashed and sank while
chasing Covadonga.
At the command of Huascar , Migue Grau managed to keep the powerful chilean squad at bay,
which for fieve months made vain efforts to sink or capture it .But on October 8 ,1879 , the
Angamos battle took place , where a powerful enemy fleet sunrounded the Huascar , which
resisted as long as it could. A canoon shot from the Chilean ship Cochrane killed thegreat
Knight of the Seas.
Miguel Grau Seminario for his personal virtues and his great services to the Peruvian
motherland , is today considered The Peruvian of the Millenium.
