Exercise 2 - Linear Motion

This document contains 13 questions about linear motion, including definitions of terms like distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration. It asks the learner to calculate values like acceleration, deceleration, time, distance, and velocity given graphs or descriptions of an object's motion. For example, it may provide the initial and final velocities and ask for the time or distance. It also asks the learner to distinguish between speed and velocity, and acceleration and deceleration. The questions cover kinematic equations and involve calculating values from velocity-time or distance-time graphs.

i) Distance
ii) Displacement
iii) Speed
iv) velocity
v) Acceleration
vi) Deceleration

2. State differences between :

i) Speed and velocity
ii) Acceleration and deceleration

3. An aircraft accelerates uniformly from rest at 3.1 m/s2 to reach its take-off velocity of
100 m/s.
i) How long does it take for the aircraft to leave the ground?
ii) How far does it travel during the take-off?

4. A bus moving at a velocity of 110 kmh-1 stop after its brakes are applied. The distance
when the brakes are applied till it stopped in 500 m. Calculate:
i. Acceleration of the bus.
ii. The time taken for the bus to stop.

5. A car started from a rest and accelerated at 10.23m/s2 for 5.5 second. Calculate the distance
covered by the car.

6. A space-rocket is launched and it accelerated uniformly from rest to 160m/s in 0.075

minutes. Calculate how far the rocket traveled within that time.
7. A motorcycle travelling at 20ms-1 stops after a distance of 50m. Calculate:
a) The deceleration
b) The time taken for it to stop.

8. A particle which initially at rest, moves in a straight line with uniform acceleration and covers
0.5km in 1.2 minutes. Calculate:
a) The acceleration
b) The final velocity of the object. Give your answer in SI units.
