Detailed Solutions

1. Let their speeds be x km/hr and y km/hr.

When they move in same direction, let them meet at M. Then, AM – BM = AB.
∴ 6x – 6y = 60 or x – y = 10 .....(i)
When they move in opposite direction, let them meet at N. Then AN + BN = AB
2x + 2y = 60 or x + y = 30 .....(ii)
Solving (i) and (ii) we get x = 20, y = 10. Ans.(2)
2. Let Ameet’s speed = x km/hr and Suresh’s Speed = y km/hr.

30 30 30 30
− = 2, − = 1.
x y y 2x

1 1
Putting = u and = v, these equations become :
x y
15u – 15v = 1 and – 15u + 30v = 1.

1 2
On solving these equations, we get u = & v= .
5 15

1 1 1 2 15
∴ = and = . So, x = 5 and y = .
x 5 y 15 2

Hence, Ameet’s Speed = 5 km/hr. Ans.(1)

3. Let length = x and breadth = y. Then,
xy – (x – 5) (y + 3) = 9 and (x + 3) (y + 2) –xy = 67
or 3x – 5y = 6 and 2x + 3y = 61.
On solving these equations, we get x = 17, y = 9. Ans.(3)
4. Let the larger number be x and the smaller one y.
Then, 2x – 20 = y and 2y – 5 = x
∴ 2x – y = 20 and x – 2y = – 5. So, x = 15 and y = 10.
Hence, larger number = 15. Ans.(3)
5. Let the width of the room be x metres. Then, area = 4x. Area of each new square room = 2x.
Let the side of new each room = y. Then y 2 = 2x. Clearly, 2x is a complete square, when x = 2.
∴ y 2 = 4 or y = 2 m. Ans.(2)

6. Perimeter =
Total Cost FG
=
400IJ
m = 400 m. Side
FG 400 IJ m = 100 m.
Rate H 1 K H1K
Area = (10 2) 2 = 10 4 m2. Ans.(4)
7. Let length = 10 m and breadth = 10m. Then, area = 100 m2.
New length = (140% or 10) = 14m. New breadth = (130% of 10) = 13 m.
New area = (14 × 13) m2 = 182 m2 ∴ Increase percent in area = 82%. Ans.(3)
8. Let length of side = 10 m. Then, area = 100 m 2 . New side = (150% of 10) = 15m.
New are = 15 × 15) m 2 = 225 m 2 increase percent in area = (225 – 100)% = 125%. Ans.(3)
9. S.P. = Rs.100, Gain = Rs.10, C.P. = Rs.(100 – 10) = Rs.90.

Gain on Rs.90 is Rs.10. So, gain % =

FG 10 × 100IJ % = 11 1 % . Ans.(4)
H 90 K 9

10. S.P. = Rs.100, Loss = Rs.10. So, C.P. = Rs.(100 + 10) = Rs.110.
∴ Loss on Rs.110 is Rs.10.

Hence, loss % =
FG 10 × 100IJ % = 9 1 % . Ans.(3)
H 110 K 11
