PREFERENCES

A. Pengertian
Expressing Preferences adalah ungkapan yang menyatakan kelebih
sukaan (Preferences). Expressi ini tentunya digunakan untuk menandakan
kelebih sukaan seseorang terhadap suatu hal bisa berupa benda, orang,
tempat dll.

B. Fungsi
1. To talk about general preferences. Mengungkapkan Kelebih sukaan
yang bersifat umum

2. To talk about specific preferences. Mengungkapkan Kelebih Sukaan


Yang bersifat Khusus

C. Pola Pembentukan Kalimat


Dalam pembentukan ungkapan ini dengan pola kalimat sebagai berikut:

1. Prefer
Prefer + to infinitive
Prefer + nouns + to + nouns
Prefer + V-ing + to + V-ing

contoh.
• They prefer to stay home
• My mother prefers lemon to orange juice
• She prefers swimming to dancing

2. would rather

Would rather + bare infinitives


Would rather + bare infinitives + than + bare infinitives
Would rather + bare infinitives + nouns + than + bare infinitives + nouns

 I would rather study now


 She would rather stay home than go shopping
 You would rather speak English than French

3. Would prefer to

Would prefer + to infinitives + rather than + bare infinitives


Would prefer + to infinitives + nouns + rather than + bare infinitives +
nouns

contoh

 They would prefer to sing rather than dance.


 You’d prefer to play ball rather than take a sleep.

4. Like

Like + nouns / V-ing + better than + nouns / V-ing

contoh.
• I like singing a song better than playing a guitar
• I like coffee better than tea.

D. Contoh Kalimat expressing preference


Mari kita amati dan perhatikan  contoh-contoh expressing preferences berikut
ini:

 Hazzel likes reading better than writing.(Hazzel lebih suka membaca


daripada menulis)
 Harry prefers fishing to playing kite.(Harry lebih suka memancing
daripada bermain layangan)
 Hazzel would rather read than write.(Hazzel lebih suka membaca
daripada menulis)
 I like going to the mall better than stay at home at weekends.(saya
lebih suka pergi ke mall daripada diam di rumah pada akhir pekan)
 Keony likes oranges better than water melon. (Keony lebih suka
jeruk daripada semangka)
 Udin prefers wearing a hat to using an umbrella (Udin lebih suka
pakai topi daripada menggunakan payung)
 Ucup would rather live in Bogor than in Jakarta.(Ucup lebih suka
tinggal di Bogor daripada di Jakarta)
 Anggy  likes sleeping on the floor better than on the bed.(Anggy 
lebih suka tidur di lantai daripada di kasur)
