19. Sprain means

Answers:

1. The axial skeleton is the part of the skeleton that consists of the bones of the head and
trunk of a vertebrate. In the human skeleton, it consists of 80 bones along the long axis of
the body above the pelvis. It is composed of six parts; the skull bones, the ossicles of the
middle ear, the hyoid bone, the rib cage, sternum and the vertebral column.
2. Bones found in leg (thigh to toe)

Bone Name Remarks

femur thigh bone - LONGEST and HEAVIEST BONE
patella knee cap
tibia first of the two bones of lower leg
fibula second and smaller bone of lower leg - THINNEST BONE
Talus ankle bone in Hindfoot
Calcaneus Heel bone in Hindfoot
Tarsal bones (cuboid bone, navicular Group of bones in Midfoot
bone, and three cuneiform bones)
five metatarsal bones (one for each Forefoot
toe)
fourteen phalanges bones. Forefoot

3. Only movable bone in skull - Jaw bone

4. Antagonist muscles act in opposition to each other. The main muscle is the prime mover,
and the antagonist muscle is the muscle that moves in opposition, and as a result of, the
movement of the Prime Mover.

E.g. Biceps and Triceps Flexing hand TOWARDS body.

Bicep=Prime Mover=Contracts to produce movement Triceps=Antagonist

Muscle=Relaxes to allow movement.

5. The smallest muscle is the stapedius in the middle ear.

6. Based on the color the skeletal muscles are classified into two types: Red and White.

*White muscle eg: Extensor muscle on back of human body

Red muscle eg : Muscles of the eye ball*

Red in color is due to the presence of large amount of myoglobin

7. The phalanges are the bones that make up the fingers of the hand and the toes of the foot.
There are 56 phalanges in the human body, with fourteen on each hand and foot. Three
phalanges are present on each finger and toe, with the exception of the thumb and large
toe, which possess only two.
*Types:

a. Proximal phalanges
b. Intermediate phalanges
c. Distal phalanges*
8. Structural classification of joints (3 types)

Joint Name Type Example

Fibrous Joints Fixed Joints Skull, upper jaw, rib cage, backbone, and
pelvic bone, etc.
Cartilaginous Joints Slightly Moveable Joints spinal column and the ribcage
Synovial Joints Freely Movable Joints shoulder joint, neck joint, knee joint, wrist
joint, etc

9. ECG - electrocardiogram

EMG - electromyogram

The amplitude and bandwidth of the measurements vary for each

10. No of bones in skull - 22

11. Bones forming cells are called osteocytes
12. Example of ball and socket/gliding joint in our body: shoulder
13. The hyoid bone is found in the neck and acts as a point of attachment of several muscles in
the head and neck that have to do with swallowing, mainly. The hyoid bone is unique in
that it is the only bone in the body that is not attached to another bone.
14. No of facial bones - 14
15. The ulna is one of two bones that give structure to the forearm. The ulna is located on the
opposite side of the forearm from the thumb
16. Other name of knee cap is patella
17. Hinge joint moves in only one direction. Eg: Knee joint
18. The study of bones is called osteology

Bone doctors have been known as orthopaedists or orthopedists

19. Sprain means an injury to a joint
