Directions: Refer to the data below and answer the questions that follow.

Last year, there were 3 sections in a company paper, out of them 33 students cleared the cut-off
in the section 1. 34 students cleared the cut – off in section 2 and 32 cleared the cut – off in
section 3. 10 students cleared the cut – off section 1 and section 2, 9 cleared the cut – off in
section 2 and section 3, 8 cleared the cut – off in section 1 and section 3. The number of people
who cleared each section alone was equal and was 21 for each section.
Q.1 The ratio of the number of students clearing the cut – off in one or more of the sections to
the number of students clearing the cut – off in section 1 alone is?
1) 78⁄21
15
2) ⁄21
3) 78⁄63
4) None of these
Correct Option : 1

Solution : Let there be ‘x’ students who have cleared all 3 sections given that 10 students cleared
both section-1 and section-2, we get the number of students who cleared only (section-1 and
section-2) as 10-x. Similarly, number of students who cleared only (section-2 and section-3) is 9-
x and those who cleared only (section-3 and section-1) is 8-x.
Now, compare the total of any one section to find the value of x
Given that number of students who cleared section-1 is 33, we get:
33=21+(10-x)+x(8-x)
⇒ 33=39-x
⇒ x=6
So, the number of students who cleared all the three sections is 6.
Now, by counting, the number of students who cleared cut-off in one or more sections is 78 and
the number of students who cleared cut-off in section -1 alone is 21. So, the required ratio is
78/21.

A leading Indian industrialist in a recent article on ways to -strengthen India’s economy has -
drawn attention to the problems of inflation and industrial sickness among other things. One of
the main’ reasons for industrial sickness in our country have been the fact that business and
industrial managers, have not been able to look, beyond the immediate future. They have been
too preoccupied' with their attempts to report favorable results for the current year higher profits
and larger dividends to the share holders The planning horizon has hardly ever exceeded five
years Investments have been inadequate for new plants and, to Wards diversification and
expansions Modernisation and asset creation has seriously lagged behind business, growth is
needed for survival One has to grow if one does not Want to be wiped Out. This is particularly
true today with liberalization of imports and increasing competition Moreover, growth and
higher productivity create employment and higher employment creates larger markets both for
industrial and- consumer Products It was Henry Ford brought home the need for the creation of a
larger and a more stable middle class that is 4 larger number of people who can afford More and
more of goods and services Even after forty years of independence our industrialists have not
been able to shed the petty shopkeeper's mentality and our highly educated management has
tagged along merrily and without concern. "

Q.10 The sum of the present age of the father and his daughter is 42 years. 7 years later, the
father will be 3 times old than the daughter. The present age of the father is:
1) 35
2) 28
3) 32
4) 33
Correct Option : 1
Solution : Let father’s present age be ‘x’ years and the daughter’s present age be ‘42 – x’ years.
After 7 years, the father’s age will be x+7 and the daughter’s age will be 42-x + 7.
So, we get the equation as x + 7 = 3(42 – x + 7)
⇒ x = 35 years.
So, the present age of the father is 35 years.

Q.11 It takes Mr. Karthik ‘y’ hours to complete typing a manuscript. After 2 hours, he was called
away. What fractional part of the assignment was left incomplete?
1) 2⁄y
2) (y+2)⁄y
3) (y-2)⁄y
4) 1 - (1⁄y)
Correct Option : 3
Solution : To type a manuscript, Karthik took ‘y’ hours.
Therefore, part of work done in 1 hour = 1⁄y.
He was called away after 2 hours of typing, in which he completed 2⁄y of the work.
Therefore, the remaining work to be completed = 1 – 2⁄y.
(i.e.) work to be completed = (y-2)⁄y.

Q.12 Mr. Santosh deposited a total amount of Rs. 65,000 in three different schemes A, B and C
with rates of interest 12% p.a., 16% p.a. and 18% p.a. respectively and earned a total interest of
Rs. 10,180 in one year. If the amount invested in Scheme A was 72% of the amount invested in
Scheme 'C', what was the amount invested in Scheme B ?
1) Rs. 25,000
2) Rs. 22,000
3) Rs. 18,000
4) Cannot be determined
Correct Option : 2
Solution : Given that Amount of A is 72% of C, we get A : C = 72 : 100 ? A : C = 18 : 25.
Let amounts of A and C be 18x and 25x respectively.
Then, we get 18x + 25x + B = 65,000 ----Eq(1)
Also given that the total interest at the end of the year to be 10,180, we get the equation as
12%(18x) + 18%(25x) + 16%(B) = 10,180 ---Eq(2)
Solving the two equations, we get B = 22,000.

Q.13 A student on his birthday distributed on an average 5 chocolates per student. If on the
arrival of the teacher and the headmaster to whom the student gives 10 and 15 chocolates
respectively, the average chocolate distributed per head increases to 5.5, then what is the strength
of the class?
1) 28
2) 30
3) 32
4) None of these
Correct Option : 1
Solution : Let the strength of the class be ‘x’.
After the teacher and headmaster joins, number of people become ‘x+2’.
So, the total number of chocolates distributed to students is 5x and the number of chocolates
distributed to all is 5.5(x+2).
We know that ‘Total chocolates to students + Teacher + Headmaster = Total of all the chocolates
distributed to all’.
⇒ 5x + 10 + 15 = 5.5(x + 2)
⇒ 0.5x = 14
⇒x = 28.
So, the number of students in the class is 28.

2) 3 : 2 : 16
3) 10 : 15 : 18
4) 15 : 10 : 18
Correct Option : 4
Solution : 20⁄100 A = 30⁄100 B = C⁄6 or A⁄5= B⁄10⁄3= C⁄6
∴ A : B : C = 5 : 10⁄3 : 6 or 15 : 10 : 18.

Q.16 An alloy of zinc and copper contains the metals in the ratio 5 : 3. The quantity of zinc to be
added to 16 kg of the alloy so that the ratio of the metal may be 3 : 1 is:
1) 2 kg
2) 4 kg
3) 3 kg
4) 8 kg
Correct Option : 4
Solution : Given that there is 16 kgs of the alloy, we can find the amount of zinc and copper in
it.
Amount of Zinc = 5⁄8 × 16 = 10 kgs.
Amount of Copper = 3⁄8 × 16 = 6 kgs.
Let the quantity of zinc to be added be ‘x’ kgs.
So, we get (10+x)⁄6 = 3⁄1.
Solving the equation, we get x = 8 kgs.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.17 Albela, Bob and Chulbul have to read a document of seventy eight pages and make a
presentation next day. They realize that the article is difficult to understand and they would
require team work to finish the assignment. Albela can read a page in 2 minutes, Bob in 3
minutes, and Chulbul in 4 minutes. If they divide the article into 3 parts so that all three of them
spend the equal amount of time on the article, the number of pages that Bob should read is
1) 24
2) 25
3) 26
4) 27
Correct Option : 1
Solution : the speeds with which they read be 1⁄2,1⁄3 and 1⁄4 pages per minute respectively.
Let be the total time taken by them to read 78 pages.
t×(1⁄2 + 1⁄3 + 1⁄4 ) = 78
∴t =72
Hence, Let the number of pages that Bob should read = t ×1⁄3 = 72⁄3 = 24 pages
Hence, the correct answer is option 1.

Q.18 A contractor agreeing to finish a work in 150 days, employed 75 men each working 8 hours
daily. After 90 days, only 2⁄7 of the work was completed. Find the number of additional men to be
employed each working now for 10 hours daily, so that the work can be completed in time.
1) 80
2) 100
3) 120
4) 150
Correct Option : 4
Solution : We know that (M1D1 H1)⁄W1 = (M2 D2 H2)⁄W2 , where ‘M’ is the number of men, ‘D’
is the number of days, ‘H’ is the number of hours and ‘W’ is the amount of work done.
Let the number of additional men joining the work be ‘x’.
Given that M1 = 75, D1 = 90, H1 = 8,W1 = 2⁄7, M2 = 75+x, D2 = 60 (as 90 days are already
completed out of the target 150 days, we need to complete remaining work in 60 days), H2 = 10
and W2 = 5⁄7 (as 2⁄7 of the work was already completed, the remaining work is 1 – (2⁄7) = 5⁄7)
Substituting the values in the formula, we get x = 150.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.19 A bus started from bus stand at 8.00am at a speed of 18mph, reached its destination, waited
for half hour and then returned back to the bus stand. The destination is 27 miles away from the
bus stand and the bus returned with a speed which is 50% fasterthan the initial speed. Find the
time at which the bus returns to the bus stand?
1) 11 PM
2) 11 AM
3) 12 Noon
4) 3 PM
Correct Option : 2
Solution : Time taken to reach the destination = Distance⁄ Speed = 27⁄18 = 1.5 hrs.
Waiting time at the destination = 0.5 hrs.
Given that return speed is 50% more than initial speed of 18 mph, we get the return speed to be
150% of 18 = 27 mph.
Time taken for return journey = Distance / Speed = 27⁄ 27 = 1 hr.
Total time taken = 1.5 + 0.5 + 1 = 3 hours.
Time when the bus returns = 8 AM + 3 hrs = 11 AM.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.20 Prof. Mandal walks to the market and comes back in an auto. It takes him 90 minutes to
make the round trip. If he takes an auto both ways it takes him 30 minutes. On Sunday, he
decides to walk both ways. How long would it take him?
1) 100 minutes
2) 120 minutes
3) 140 minutes
4) 150 minutes
Correct Option : 4
Solution : When Prof. Mandal takes an auto both ways, it takes him 30 minutes.
It means that one way by auto would take 15 minutes.
So from the round trip of 90 minutes, we subtract 15 minutes corresponding to the auto.
We get 75 minutes, which is the time taken to cover one way walking.
Hence, the time taken for round trip walking equals 75 × 2 = 150 minutes.
Hence, the correct answer is option 4.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.21 Ram, Shyam and Hari went out for a 100 km journey. Ram and Hari started the journey in
Ram’s car at the rate of 25 kmph, while Shyam walked at 5 kmph. After sometime. Hari got off
and started walking at the rate of 5 kmph and Ram went back to pick up Shyam. All three
reached the destination simultaneously. The number of hours required for the trip was:
1) 8
2) 7
3) 6
4) 5
Correct Option : 1
Solution : Let the distance travelled by Ram before Hari got off be 30d.
For the same time, since the speed of Ram and Shyam is in the ratio 5:1, distance too would be in
the same ratio i.e. 5:1.
∴ The distance travelled by Shyam when Hari got off = 6d.
Now, out of the distance 24d (Distance between Ram andShyam when Hari got off), Shyam will
cover 4d and Ram will cover 20d.
∴Total time taken by Ram = 30d+20d+20d+100-30d⁄25 = 100-40d⁄25
The total time taken by Hari = (30d⁄25)+ (100-30d⁄5) = (500-120d)⁄25
As the time taken in both the cases is equal,
(100+40d)
⁄25 = (500-120d)⁄25
∴d = 2.5
∴Time taken = 100+40(2.5)⁄25 = 8 hours.
Hence the correct answer is option 1.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.22 Mr. Mehra is planning for higher education expenses of his two sons aged 15 and 12. He
plans to divide Rs 15 lakhs in two equal parts and invest in two different plans such that his sons
may have access to Rs. 21 lakhs each when they reach the age of 21. He is looking for plan that
will give him a simple interest per annum. The rates of interest of the plans for his younger son
and elder son should be
1) 5% and 7.5% respectively
2) 8% and 12% respectively
3) 10% and 15% respectively
4) 15% and 22.5% respectively
5) 20% and 30% respectively
Correct Option : 5
Solution : For the younger child, Rs 7.5 lakhs should become 21 Lakhs in 9 years,
Hence,
7.5 (1+ 9 (x⁄100)) = 21
Where x is the rate of interest for the younger child.
∴x = 20%
Similarly, for the elder son, if y is the rate of interest,
7.5 (1+ 6 (y⁄100)) = 21
∴y = 30
Hence, the correct answer is option 5.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.23 Surendra, Rajendra and Manindra invested some amount in a business in the ratio of 5 :7 :
6 respectively. In the next year they increased their investments by 26%, 20% and 15%
respectively. The profit earned during the second year should be distributed in what ratio among
Surendra, Rajendra and Manindra respectively ?
1) 31 : 27 : 21
2) 21 : 28 : 23
3) 26 : 20 : 15
4) Cannot be determined
Correct Option : 2
Solution : Let the investments initially be 5x, 7x and 6x respectively.
A value increased by x% becomes (100+x)%.
So, in the second year, the investments will be : 5×(126⁄100) : 7×(120⁄100) : 6×(115⁄100) = 6.3 : 8.4 : 6.9 =
21 : 28 : 23.
Choose the right option for the following
Q.24 Income of C is 20% more than that of B and income of B is 25% more than that of A. Find
out by how much % is the income of C more than that of A.
1) 25 %
2) 75 %
3) 50 %
4) 100 %
Correct Option : 3
Solution : Let A be 100% and then B becomes 125% as it is 25% more than A.
Given that C is 20% more than B and so, it becomes 120% of B which is (120⁄100)*125 = 150%.
C(150%) is more than A(100%) by 50%.
So, the answer is option 3.

he would not lose anything; but if he sold the horse at 5% loss and the cart at 5% gain, he would
lose Rs.10 in the bargain. Find the amount paid by him for the horse.
1) 400
2) 200
3) 300
4) 250
Correct Option : 1
Solution : Let ‘x’ be the cost price of the horse and ‘y’ be the cost price of the cart.
In the first sale there is no loss or profit. i.e., The loss obtained is equal to the gain.
Therefore (10⁄100) * x = (20⁄100) * y
X = 2 * y -----------------(1)
In the second sale, he lost Rs. 10. i.e., The loss is greater than the profit by Rs. 10.
Therefore (5 ⁄ 100) * x = (5 ⁄ 100) * y + 10 -------(2)
Solving equations (1) and (2), we get x = 400 and y = 200.
So, the price of the horse is Rs.400.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.28 By selling 12pens for a rupee, a man loses 20%. How many for a rupee should he sell to
gain 20%?
1) 10
2) 9
3) 8
4) None
Correct Option : 3
Solution : Given Selling price of 12 pens = Re.1
So, selling price of 1 pen = Re. 1⁄12
Loss % = 20% and so, it means the article is sold for 80% of the cost price which is given as 1⁄12.
To gain 20%, we need to find 120% of the cost price.
80% ---- 1⁄12
120% --- ?
By cross multiplication, we get the value of the selling price as 1⁄8.
So, if the selling price is 1⁄8, it indicates that 8 pens are to be sold for a rupee to gain 20%.

Choose the right option for the following

Q.29 A man sold two houses for Rs.4,68,894 each. On one he gains 20% and the other he loses
20%. How much % did he gain or loss?
1) 5% gain
2) 4% loss
3) 3% loss
4) 4% gain
Correct Option : 2
Solution : If the selling price of two articles is same and one article is sold at x% profit and the
other article is sold at x% loss, then there will always be a loss of x2⁄100 %.
In the given question, the value of x is 20 and so, there will be a loss of 4%.

Q.30 If IQS : LNV, then JRM : ?
1) OKS
2) MOP
3) NIP
4) MOQ
Correct Option : 2
Solution : Considering the positions of the letters in the alphabet,
I + 3 = L, Q – 3 = N and S + 3 = V
So J + 3 = M, R - 3 = O and M + 3 = P.
Hence the correct analogy is JRM : MOP
Hence, the answer is option2.

"Directions: These questions are based on the data given below.

There are only four members of a family viz., A, B, C and D and there is only one couple among
them. When asked about their relationships, following were their replies: a. A: B is my son. D is
my mother. b. B: C is my wife. Dis my father. c. C: D is my mother – in – law. A is my daughter.
d. D: A is my grand – daughter. B is my daughter – in – law. "
Q.31 Who always speaks the truth?
1) A
2) B
3) C
4) D
Correct Option : 4
Solution : "The person with both statements true will be the one whose statements help establish
the relationships between all 4 members and especially between B and C.
This is because one of the questions explicitly asks for the relationship between B and C and
there is no answer option such as “None of the above” or “Data Insufficient”.
Consider A: B is A’s son and D is A’s mother.
However, there is no information about C.
Therefore, the relationship between B and C cannot be established.
Therefore, both of A’s statements cannot be true.
Consider B: B is C’s husband and D is B’s father.
However, there is no information on A. A could be B and C’s child or B’s sibling.
Therefore, both of B’s statements cannot be true.
Consider C: D is C’s mother-in-law and A is C’s daughter.
Since the family has only four members, B has to be C’s spouse. Thus, the overall relationship
between the four members is known.
It is also known that B and C are a couple.
However, it cannot be said whether B is the husband or wife of C.
Therefore, both of C’s statements also cannot be considered true.
Consider D: A is D’s grand-daughter and B is D’s daughter-in-law.
Again, since there are only 4 members in the family, C should be B’s husband, D’s son and A’s
father.
Thus, D is the grand-parent, B and C are the couple where C is the husband and A is the grand-
daughter.
Thus, D’s statements give the overall relationships as well as the specific relationship between B
and C.
Therefore, D is the person who always speaks the truth.
Hence, option 4. "

"Answer questions based on the following information:

Two traders, Chetan and Michael, were involved in the buying and selling of MCS shares over
five trading days. At the beginning of the first day, the MCS share was priced at Rs. 100, while at
the end of the fifth day it was priced at Rs. 110. At the end of each day, the MCS share price
either went up by Rs. 10, or else, it came down by Rs. 10. Both Chetan and Michael took buying
and selling decisions at the end of each trading day.
The beginning price of MCS share on a given day was the same as the ending price of the
previous day. Chetan and Michael started with the same number of shares and amount of cash,
and had enough of both. Below are some additional facts about how Chetan and Michael traded
over the five trading days.
Each day if the price went up, Chetan sold 10 shares of MCS at the closing price. On the other
hand, each day if the price went down, he bought 10 shares at the closing price.
If on any day, the closing price was above Rs. 110, then Michael sold 10 shares of MCS, while if
it was below Rs. 90, he bought 10 shares, all at the closing price. "
Q.40 If Chetan sold 10 shares of MCS on three consecutive days, while Michael sold 10 shares
only once during the five days, what was the price of MCS at the end of day 3?
1) Rs. 90
2) Rs. 100
3) Rs. 110
4) Rs. 120
5) Not uniquely determinable
Correct Option : 3

Solution : Let the price of the share rise on x days and fall on y days.
As the price increases by Rs. 10 in the five days, we have: x + y = 5 and 10x – 10y = 10
Solving the above two equations simultaneously, we have x = 3 and y = 2
The price of the share goes up on 3 days and falls on 2 days.
The three days on which the price rises can be selected in5C3 = 10 ways
The following are the 10 cases:
Consider Case 5:
Chetan sells on Days 1, 2 and 4 and buys on days 3 and 5.
Change in the number of shares he has = –30 + 20 = –10
Change in his cash = 10 × (110 + 120 + 120) – 10 × (110 + 110) = Rs. 1300
Michael sells on days 2 and 4, but never buys as the share price does not go below Rs. 90.
Change in the number of shares he has = –20
Change in his cash = 10 × (120 + 120) = Rs. 2400
The other cases are evaluated in a similar manner and the data is tabulated as shown above.
Chetan sold on three consecutive days: Cases 1, 2 and 3.
Michael sold only once: Case 3.
∴ The price of the share at the end of day 3 = Rs. 110
Hence, option 3.

Last year, there were 3 sections in acompany paper, out of them 33 students cleared the cut-off in
the section 1. 34 students cleared the cut – off in section 2 and 32 cleared the cut – off in section
3. 10 students cleared the cut – off section 1 and section 2, 9 cleared the cut – off in section 2 and
section 3, 8 cleared the cut – off in section 1 and section 3. The number of people who cleared
each section alone was equal and was 21 for each section.
Q.52 How many cleared all the three sections?
1) 3
2) 6
3) 5
4) 7
Correct Option : 2
Solution : Let there be ‘x’ students who have cleared all 3 sections given that 10 students cleared
both section-1 and section-2, we get the number of students who cleared only (section-1 and
section-2) as 10-x. Similarly, number of students who cleared only (section-2 and section-3) is 9-
x and those who cleared only (section-3 and section-1) is 8-x.
Now, compare the total of any one section to find the value of x
Given that number of students who cleared section-1 is 33, we get:
33=21+(10-x)+x(8-x)
⇒ 33=39-x
⇒ x=6
So, the number of students who cleared all the three sections is 6.

Directions: Refer to the data below and answer the questions that follow.
