Thousands and Ten Thousands

What’s In

Before we proceed to our topic, let us see if you can still remember the
concept about place value and value.

Here is a place value chart.

In 54 206, what is the place value and value of the digit 2? ___________

Yes. The place value of the digit 2 is hundreds and its value is 200.

How about the place value and value of the digit 5?

Great! The place value of the digit is ten thousands and its value is 100 000.

Try this.

Complete the table. Write the place value and value of the underlined digit. The
first one is done for you.

7
Do you still remember what place value and value are?

Place value refers to the position of a digit in a number. Value tells how much a digit
represents in a number.

What’s New

Let’s Explore and Discover

Quezon City is the biggest city in the National
Capital Region. It has 6 Legislative Districts with 142
barangays.
One of the barangays in Congressional District 4
is Barangay Pinyahan. Based on the 2015 Census of
Population, Barangay Pinyahan had the population that
is 27 653.
About how many thousands is the population of
Barangay Pinyahan?
You can find the answer to this by rounding the
number 27 653 to the nearest thousands. A rounded
number tells about how much or how many. You can use a number line when
rounding numbers.
Study the number line below.

27 653

24 000 25 000 26 000 27 000 28 000 29 000 30 000

To which number is 27 653 closer, 27 000 or 28 000?

Since 27 653 is closer to 28 000, you can say that 27 653 becomes 28 000
when rounded to the nearest thousands.
Hence, the population of Barangay Pinyahan is about 28 000.

8
What is it

Example 1:
Round 24 278 to the nearest thousands.
For this example, you can use your knowledge of place values to find for the
answer.

Let us follow the steps.

Step 1: Underline the digit in the indicated place value. Then encircle the digit at
the right of the underlined digit.

24 278
Step 2: Identify if the encircled digit is round up or round down.

Round up if the digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 5

6
You need to add 1 to the underlined digit
7
8
4 9
3
2
1 Round down if the digit is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4
0 You just need to copy the underlined digit

24 278
Since the encircled digit is 2, that is round down. Just copy the underlined digit. It
is still 4.

Step 3: Copy all the digits at the left of the underlined digits and replace all the
digits on the right with 0.

24 278 24 000

Therefore, 24 278 when rounded to the nearest thousand is 24 000.

9
Example 2:
Round 39 642 to the nearest ten thousands.
Step 1: Underline the digit 3 and encircle the digit 9
39 642 39 642
Step 2: Identify if round up or round down.
39 642
Since the encircled digit is 9 that is round up. You need to add 1 to the underlined
digit which is 3. 3+1 = 4
Step 3: Copy all the digits at the left of the underlined digits and replace all the
digits on the right with 0.
39 642 40 000
Hence, 39 642 rounded to the nearest ten thousands is 40 000.

2 Ordering Numbers up to 100 000 in

Increasing or Decreasing Order

What’s In

Let’s have a short recall about our previous lesson.

Do you still remember how to round numbers to the nearest thousands and
ten thousands? Let’s see. Try this.

Complete the table.

Number Round to the nearest

Thousands Ten thousands
54 696
21 458
18 994

Do you still remember how to round numbers?

In rounding numbers, follow the steps.

Step 1: Underline the digit in the indicated place value, then encircle the digit at the
right.

Step 2: Identify the underlined digit if it is round up or round down.

Round up is the digit is 5,6,7,8, or 9, add 1 to the underlined digit while round down
if the digit is 0,1,2,3, or 4, just copy the underlined digit.

Step 3: Copy all the digits at the left of the underlined digit and replace all the digits
on the right with 0.

You are now ready for our new topic. Enjoy!

What’s New

Let’s Explore and Discover

Zyrene is a Grade 4 pupil who lives in Barangay Krus
na Ligas in Quezon City. Based on the 2015 Census of
Population, barangay has a population of 21 513. She
wanted to know the population of other barangays in
Quezon City for their homework, so, she made the table
below.

Barangay Population
Bagong Pag asa 32 267
Central 17 590
Fairview 53 151
Manresa 21 413
Tandang Sora 90 290

Which has the bigger population, Barangay Krus na Ligas or Barangay

Manresa? Which barangay has the biggest population in the list? Which barangay
has the least number? If we are going to arrange the numbers in increasing or
decreasing order what should we do first?

What is it
You can easily compare number with the help of a place value chart.
Example 1:
Compare the population of Barangay Krus na Ligas and Barangay Manresa.
In comparing numbers, you need to compare the digits starting from the
highest place value. In this case, the highest place value is ten thousands. Compare
the digits in ten thousands place. Since it is both 2, proceed to the next place value
which is thousands place. Still the digits are the same. Then proceed to hundreds
place.
BARANGAY

Thousands

Thousands

Thousands

Hundreds
Hundred

Ones
Tens
Ten

Krus na Ligas
2 1 5 1 3

Manresa 2 1 4 1 3

16
In this case 5 is greater than 4, therefore 21 513 is greater than 21 413. In
symbols 21 513 > 21 413.

Example 2
Arrange the population of the listed barangays in increasing/ascending
order.

Barangay Population
Bagong Pag asa 32 267
Central 17 590 Notes to the Teacher
Fairview 53 151 Ascending Order means from least to greatest
Manresa 21 413
Descending Order means from greatest to
Tandang Sora 90 290 least

We can also use the place value chart for ordering or arranging numbers.
Thousands

Thousands

Thousands

Hundreds
Hundred

Ones
Tens
Ten

3 2 2 6 7

1 7 5 9 0

5 3 1 5 1

2 1 4 1 3

9 0 2 9 0

Just like in comparing numbers, start comparing the digits from the highest
place value, in this case, it is ten thousands.
The highest digit in ten thousands place is 9, followed by 5, 3, 2, and 1.
Therefore, if we are going to arrange the numbers in decreasing order that would
be:
90 290 53 151 32 267 21 413 17 590
Given this order, we can say that Barangay Central has the least population
with 17 590 while Barangay Tandang Sora has the biggest population with 90 290.

17
Example 3
Arrange the numbers in decreasing/ descending order.
24 512 23 525 23 414 26 414
Aside from using the place value chart, you may follow the steps in ordering
numbers.
Step 1. List the given numbers vertically. Align the digits in the correct place value.
24 512
23 525
23 414
26 414
Step 2. Compare the digits in the highest place value.
24 512 26 414 All the digits in the ten thousands place are the same.
23 525 24 512 Proceed to the next place value.
23 414 The highest digit is 6, therefore 26 414 will be the first
26 414 number. Followed by 4 in 24 512.

Step 3. Continue comparing the digits in the next place value.

23 525
Since the digits in the thousands place are the same, look
23 414 at the hundreds place digits and compare.
5 > 4, therefore the 3rd number would be 23 525 and the
last 23 414.

Hence, the correct arrangement of the numbers in decreasing order is

26 414
24 512
23 525
23 414

What I Have Learned

When ordering numbers, you may use the place value chart to compare the
digits starting from the highest place value up to the least.

We can also follow these steps in ordering numbers.

Step 1. List the given numbers vertically. Align the digits in the correct place value.
Step 2. Compare the digits in the highest place value.
Step 3. Continue comparing the digits in the next place value.
There are two ways in ordering numbers – increasing or ascending and
decreasing or descending. Increasing or ascending means arranging numbers
from least to greatest. While decreasing or descending means arranging numbers
from greatest to least.
