Q Chap 5 CHM420

This document summarizes key concepts from Chapter 5 on chemical bonding: 1) It provides examples of Lewis structures showing the formation of ionic and covalent compounds between various elements. Compounds can conduct electricity depending on the type of bonds present. 2) Molecular shapes and bonding are illustrated for common diatomic and polyatomic molecules and ions like SF6, AlCl3, CH3+, BH4-, and CO2. 3) Factors that determine boiling points for different substances like NaF, HF, F2, and CF4 are explained in terms of bond strength. 4) Formation of dative covalent bonds is demonstrated for NH3 and H+ as well as PCl

CHM 420 CHAPTER 5 (Chemical Bonding)

1. The atom of element A has a nuclear charge of +11. Atom B requires two
electrons to achieve an octet (A and B are not the actual symbols of the element)

i) Using Lewis structures, show the formation of a compound between A and B.

ii) Can this solid compound conduct electricity? Explain briefly

2. The positions of elements G, H and M (not the actual symbols) in the periodic
table are given below:

Element Group Period

G IIA/2 4
H VA/15 3
M VIIA/17 3

a) Write the formula and draw the Lewis structure for the formation of the
compound between G and M.
b) Give the formula and draw the Lewis structure of the molecule formed when H
combines with M. The molecule obeys the octet rule.

d) The molecule formed in (b) can combine with an oxygen atom to form a new
molecule. Draw the Lewis structure of the new molecule. Label the two types
of bonds in the new molecule.

3. Draw and name the molecular geometry (geometric shape) of each of the
following molecules and polyatomic ions.

a) SF6 b) AlCl3 c) CH3+ d) BH4 e) CO2

4. Arrange the following substances , NaF, HF, F2 and CF4 in order of increasing
boiling points. Briefly explain your answer.

5. Using Lewis structures, show formation of a dative covalent bond between

i) NH3 molecule and H+ ion ii) PCl3 and oxygen, O
