Rizal was exiled to Dapitan from 1892-1896. During this time, he accomplished much as a physician, educator, agriculturist, businessman, inventor, artist, linguist, and scientist. He provided free medical care, established a school for boys, planted crops and trees, tried various business ventures, invented a special lighter, contributed artwork, studied local languages, and explored nature with his students. Rizal also participated in civic works and constructed a waterworks system, utilizing his engineering skills to benefit the community in Dapitan.

1 what were the events that made Rizal happy in Hong Kong?

The events that make Rizal happy were;

 The trip to Hong Kong was beautiful according to one of his letter to Blumentritt
 Rizal was one of the first class passenger
 There, he set up office at No. 5 D’Aguilar Street and No. 2 Rednaxola Terrace to earn a living.
His patients increased due to the referrals made by Dr. Lorenzo P. Marquez, a Portuguese
ophthalmologist in Hong Kong.
 He then wrote a letter to his parents for permission for his return to the country on
December 1, 1891. On the same day, he received news from his brother-in-law that DON
FRANCISCO, NENENG, SIS, and PACIANO along with other Calambenos were rusticated.
 During the Christmas of 1891, he was overjoyed by the arrival of his family in Hong Kong.
 Lorenzo Miclat congratulated Rizal for starting anew and pledged support in all his
undertakings
 Alejandrino informed him of his plans to counter-act Del Pilar’s lamentable policy, with Rizal
as leader.
 Linares Rivas promised Rizal that he would seek an audience with the Minister of Colonies in
Madrid on the agrarian problems of Calamba.
 He also received letters of sympathy from the Govantes and Boustead families for what had
happened to him in Madrid.
 The letters he received from Europe had restored his self-confidence, and re-awakened his
interest in politics. It also led him to re-examine his whole political strategy

2. Explain the Borneo colonization project of Rizal.

 Rizal plan to move to the landless Filipinos families to North Borneo, Rich British owned
Island and carved out of its virgin wilderness a “New Calamba”
 March 7,1892- Rizal went to sanakan on board the ship Menon to negotiate with the British
authorities for the establishment of the Filipino colony
 Rizal looked over the land up the Bengkoka river in Maradu Bay which was offered by the
British north Borneo Company.
 April 20,1892-rizal was back in Hong Kong
 Hidalgo-Rizal’s brother in law objected to the colonization project
 Governor Valeriano Wayler-cubans odiously called “The Butcher”
 Governor Eulogio Desuijol-the count of caspe, a new general after Wayler
 December 23, 1891, Rizal’s second letter and gave it to a ship captain to be sure it would
reach Governor Despujol’s hands. In his second letter, he requested the governor general to
permit the landless Filipinos to established themselves in Borneo
 Despujol could not approve the Filipino immigration to Borneo, alleging that “the Philippines
lacked laborers” and “it was not very patriotic to go off and cultivate foreign soil.

3. Identify the accomplishments of Rizal in Dapitan.

 As a physician, Rizal provided free medicine to his patients, most of them were under
privileged. However he also had wealthy patients who paid him well enough for his excellent
surgical skill.
 As an engineer, Rizal applied his knowledge through the waterworks system he constructed
in Dapitan.
 As an educator, Rizal established a school in Dapitan which was attended by 16 young boys
from prominent families. Instead of charging them for the matriculation, he made the
students do community projects for him like maintaining his garden and field
 As an agriculturist, Rizal devoted time in planting important crops and fruit bearing trees in
his 16- hector land
 As a business man, the adventurous Rizal with his partner, Roman Carreon, tried his luck in
fishing, hemp and copra industries
 As an inventor, little was known of Rizal. He invented a special type of lighter called
Sulpukan which he sent to Blumentritt as a gift
 As an artist, he had contributed his talent in the sisters of charity who were preparing for the
arrival of the image of the Holy Virgin. Rizal was actually the person who modelled the
image’s right foot and other details.
 As a linguist, Rizal was interested in the language used in Dapitan, thus studied and made
comparisons of the Bisyan and Malayan languages existing in the region. In fact Rizal had
knowledge in 22 languages.
 As a scientist, Rizal shared his interest with nature to his students. With his boys, they
explored the jungles and searched for specimens which he sent to museums in Europe,
particularly in dressed museums.
 Rizal also partook in civic works in Dapitan.
