(Collaboration) : Mini-Performance Task

This document describes two methods of separating materials - sieving soil to separate particles by size and filtering water through cloth. For the sieving method, 90% of soil passed through the sieve while 10% of sediments like small rocks remained. When water was filtered through cloth, only the water passed through while remnants of soil and sand remained on the cloth surface, showing cloth is effective for removing microbes but water would still be unsafe for drinking without further purification.

Mini-Performance Task

(Collaboration)

Activity 4 – Methods of Separation

Procedure A. Sand of time
1. Prepare 1 kg soil from the backyard and sieve.
2. Transfer the 1 kg soil into the sieve. Measure the mass of the sand and the
materials left on the sieve.
3. Please provide documentation.

B. Pass it through the cloth

1. Measure 100 mL water from the bottom of your water container.
2. Cover the top of a glass with a piece of cloth then pour the 100 mL water unto
it.
3. After pouring the water, observe the surface of the clothe. Note any observation
that you will make.

Observations
A. I have observed that almost 90% of the soil passed through the sieve. The
material small enough passed through the sieve and the bigger than average was
filtered and remained.

B. with the 1kilogram of soil only about 900bgraks of it was able to lass through the
sieve and about 100 grams of sediments Of small rocks remained on the sieve
hence the 10% of the material
Questions
1. What material passes though the holes of the sieve? Why?
Only the water passed through the clothe filter since water was the only
material dense to pass through the clothe._________________________________
2. What did you find on the surface of the clothe? Is it safe to drink before
passing through that clothe? Why?
On the surface of the cloth. I found remnants of the soil and sands, and no
water is still unsafe for you have filtered the sands and soil but the cloth is
the right material to filter or remove Microbes and other colloidal particles.
