Student Guide for Using myON

At the first login, students will be asked to do an Interest Inventory to see what areas students are
interested in so that myON can provide books based on a student’s likes. It takes about 5 minutes to do.

After the Interest Inventory, there will be a Lexile placement exam based on their grade level.

o The assessment is 35 questions with a 25 minutes time limit.

 If 4 questions are missed in a row, the assessment will stop and a level
determined.
o The purpose of the assessment is to determine the Lexile (reading) level of a student, so
myON can determine the best reading materials for students.
The Lexile level for a student will display just below the toolbar inside the program.

After the inventory and assessment is complete, a student can begin reading.

The Interface is different based off of the student’s grade level.

 On the far left, they will see the last book that they opened.
 At the top of the screen, they can see how much they have read.

Books can be found using the Library link at the top of the screen.

 Recommended link: These are titles that myON recommends for students based on interests,
grade level, and their Lexile level (reading level).
 Browse link: This will provide a student the option to look through the entire myON collection
(items outside their Recommended collection). Books are shown by topics and subtopics.

o Clicking on the Filter link will allow a student to filter by Fiction, Non-Fiction, and
Graphic Novels.

 Search link: This will provide a student the option to look through the entire myON collection
(items outside their Recommended collection). A search field is where a student can search for
a book. More filters are available as well when clicking on the filter link.
o Searches can be by topic, book title, or author.
When a book is shown, there are three options available:

 Open, Information, and add to myList

 The Info link will open up an Information box with more detail information about a book.
o It will display the Lexile level of the book, recommended grade levels, and other
information.

o
o Under Book Series, a student can click the link beside it to see other books available in
that series.

 If they click this link, they have the option to filter even further by Lexile level
and Grade Level.
Open a book and click the Start the Book link inside.

 When books are opened, books can be read to the student with text highlighting as it is read.
This is an audio option.
o Audio can be turned on and off at the bottom of the screen.
o Highlighting options are also available at the bottom of the screen.
 Words can be highlighted or sentences highlighted.
 This too can be turned on and off.
o The book can be played and paused using the link in the toolbar.
 Use the arrows to the right and left of the book to turn pages forward and backwards.
 If a student wants to know the definition of a word, simply double-click on the word and a
dictionary appears on the right hand side.

 If a student scrolls down to towards the bottom of the definition, a pronunciation of the word
can be listened to by clicking the audio link.

o
 Below the dictionary, Settings is listed.
o Audio Speed is an option inside of Settings.
 It will allow a student to slow down or speed up the audio reading of a book.

 Pages of the book can be accessed via the Pages link on the toolbar.
o If a student clicks on the Pages link, dots and circles will display. Student can see what
page they are on currently. Solid dots shows pages read. Circles shows pages not read.

 The Home button will close a book and bring the student back to the home page of myON.

In order for a book to be marked as finished and documented as such in myON, it is very important
that the student clicks the red END link at the end of the book. The Reader Meter displays the number
of books finished. This number is based on clicking End when a book has been completed.

Be sure to logout of myOn using the red X link in the top right-hand corner of the toolbar.
