Heat Transfer 2: Ourse Bjective Escription

This course provides an introductory treatment of heat transfer principles and their application to engineering systems. Topics include steady-state and transient convection, fundamentals of convection heat transfer, and heat transfer during phase changes like boiling and condensation. Both analytical and numerical solution methods are presented. The course aims to develop students' physical understanding of heat transfer processes and their application to technologies. Students will learn to calculate heat transfer via convection and analyze complex multi-mechanism systems. Evaluation includes assignments, a midterm, final exam, and an optional research project and presentation.

Heat Transfer 2

COURSE OBJECTIVE & DESCRIPTION

This course is intended as a one semester course for undergraduate students on faculty of
Mechanical Engineering.
Heat transfer, Engineering thermodynamics and Fluid dynamics is a pre-requisite for this course.
You are expected to have (i) a basic knowledge scheme of heat transfer, thermodynamics and fluid
dynamics. (ii) basic knowledge of simulation theory and methods.
Topics to be covered include: forced convection in laminar and turbulent flows; natural convection
in internal and external configurations; heat transfer during condensation and boiling; evaporation.
Problems and examples will emphasize modelling of complex systems drawn from manufacturing,
electronics, consumer products, and energy systems.

The goals of this class are that students will:

1. develop a strong physical and conceptual understanding of heat transfer processes; and
2. learn about their application to energy systems and other technologies.
We plan to teach interactively, rather than by a strict lecture format. The class will include coverage
of fundamentals (such as convection) as well as thermally driven problems of current importance
(such as solar energy, evaporation, and desalination).
The course will give an introductory treatment of the governing laws for heat transfer. The
following topics are covered: Steady state and transient convection, fundamentals and engineering
treatment of convection heat transfer, heat transfer with phase change (boiling/condensation), Both
analytical and numerical solution methods are presented.
The course provides the student with knowledge about:
- Basic heat transfer mechanisms convection
- Heat transfer by convection in closed conduits and on external surfaces.
-Friction and pressure loss in boundary layer flows in closed conduits and external surfaces.

- Heat transfer with phase change (boiling and condensation).

– The course gives the student insight about:
HT9900-1

- Boundary layer flow, laminar and turbulent flows.

- Heat exchangers: Working principles and basic geometries.

Skills:
The course should enable the student to:

- Calculate heat transfer by convection for practical situations.

-Analyze and calculate heat transfer in complex systems involving several heat transfer
mechanisms.

General competence:
The course should give the student:

- Basic competence related to other courses involving thermal energy systems and processes.
- Skills in analyzing and calculating heat transfer in complex problems and heat transfer equipment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to complete the following key tasks:

 Understanding on Basic Concepts: convection, the continuum and thermodynamic equilibrium

 Boundary layers and internal flows. Awareness of these configurations, some knowledge of
internal flow energy balances.
 Convection correlations. Finding heat transfer coefficients from Reynolds numbers and
Rayleigh numbers.
 Phase-change heat transfer. General awareness of processes of condensation and boiling in a
pure substance, some use of correlations.
