Intercultural communication is a
discipline that studies communication
across different cultures and social
groups, or how culture affects
communication. It is the verbal and
nonverbal interaction between people
from different cultural backgrounds.

to deal across cultures, which is increasingly
important, as the world gets smaller,
meaning having more and more contact with
people who are culturally different.

DEVELOPMENTAL MODEL OF INTERCULTURAL


SENSITIVITY (DMIS)
It was created by Dr. Milton Bennett (1986, 1993) as a framework
to explain the reactions of people to cultural difference.
Using concepts from cognitive psychology and constructivism, he
organized these observations into six stages of increasing
sensitivity to cultural difference:
