CLASSROOM OBSERVATION REPORT

Crystal (1998) states that classic English as a global language considers the history, present status and
future of the English language, focusing on its role as the leading international language. English has
always been deemed the most successful language ever, with 1500 million speakers internationally. So in
Bangladesh, English is taught as a compulsory subject for more than twelve years. But in here, people
hardly speak English in their daily life conversation even after they studied it more than twelve years.

So it has always been a challenge to be a language teacher in such type of non-native context as
Bangladesh. As a student-teacher I have to observe a real classroom to know how to teach and what to
teach. To observe the classroom, I have followed a checklist to record the activities of the teacher as well
students which described below. I observed two classrooms which was basic English language course at
State University of Bangladesh.
CLASSROOM OBSERVATION REPORT

Classroom Observation--1
Instructor: XYZ

Place of observation: State University of Bangladesh

Grade: First semester

Number of students: 23

Topic: How to write a formal letter

Date: 01.03.2020

Time: 1:00pm to 2:20pm

Introduction
On 1 march,2020; I observed a class which was a basic English language course at Dept. of English
studies at a private university. It was a writing skill-based class; he taught them how to write formal
letter. The number of students were 23 in that class. The class started at 1:00pm and ended at
2:20pm. As an observer I got the chance to observe the class. I observed the class from the
beginning to ending.

The atmosphere of the class was good. It was well decorated classroom with all modern facilities
as enough lights, air conditioned, multimedia as well as projector.

Teaching techniques
Teacher built a rapport before starting the lesson. He used slides and ample example to introduce
the lesson even though the lesson was so familiar. Moreover, at the very beginning of the class he
showed some slides to the students about topic. There were some stimulating questions and
students participated in that session. The instructor wanted to state the purpose in interesting way.
He prepared for the presentation and showed interest in the subject. Students generated the
response according to the questions which was asked by teacher.

At first teacher used L2 with easy vocabulary but he allowed the students to use their native
language. Moreover, he presented a very familiar topic in the classroom.
CLASSROOM OBSERVATION REPORT

Strengths
There was a very clear lesson plan for the class. The class was conversational and the teacher did
not stand still rather he was walking on classroom. There were some stimulating questions and
students participated in that session. Through these type of questions, he involved the students into
the topic. The instructor was enough confident to handle the class. He gave time students to talk
and response.

He used English language with easy vocabulary as students could understand the lecture. He tried
to best to explain the slides with appropriate examples.

Wish list
The lesson was so familiar: how to write a formal letter. For this he used 36 slides. These slides
were only materials for the topic. Lesson material was not so motivated. In the class; there was no
group works or pair works. Time management was not so effective. He did not able to finish all
the slides within given time.

He did not involve students to write something albeit it was writing class. The teacher did not
provide feedback to the individually rather to the whole class most of the time.

Albeit, the students did not demand to use L1; last 10 to 15 minutes he used L1 in the classroom.

Techniques that can be adapted

As it was writing class, there should have a writing session but it was not. The teacher allowed
students to use native language to ask questions it should have avoided. Besides slides teacher
could brought other materials. As it was a basic language classroom; both teacher and students
avoided native language rather they could use target language for interaction.
CLASSROOM OBSERVATION REPORT

Classroom Observation--2

Instructor: XYZ

Place of observation: State University of Bangladesh

Grade: First semester

Number of students: 21

Topic: Reading a passage

Date: 03.03.2020

Time: 9:30am to 11:00pm

Introduction
For the course “Teaching Practicum”, I observed a non-departmental Basic English Course.
However, while I was observing the class, I was followed by the following purposes and principles.

I observed a non-departmental basic English course. It was a rainy morning, so that the number of
students were 21. The class was started at 9.30am and lasted 11.00am. However, before going to
the topic she started the class asking some stimulating questions and students responded
spontaneously. Then she stated the purposes of the topic and gave a handout which contained a
passage with some relevant activities.

The class atmosphere good and accepting; all modern facilitates were available in the class room
(Ac, projector, multimedia).

The seating order was fine there were two rows. The teacher’s feedback was so supportive as well
constructive.

Teaching Techniques
The instructor controlled the whole class in friendly way. She provided chance to students used
brainstorming and sometimes allowed students to make hypothesizes about the given topic before
going to activities. Thus, students generated responses in many interesting ways and some
responses to make us laugh. She was conversational and her pace of the presentation varied
according to student’s participation. This trait of her presentation; I enjoyed simultaneous I learned
how to vibrant the class even though the topic is not familiar. The eye contact and voice quality of

the instructor was good, and the most important thing which I noticed that she did not stand in stiff
manner or hiding behind the podium rather she walked through the aisle.

The presence of teacher in the class room was approachable. She took the time to introduce the
lesson in an easiest way. She used many suitable examples to make the topic clear to the students.
The lesson material which was given by instructor was related to the topic and objectives of the
class what she intended to teach were met.

So, it was a basic English course, teacher used L2 in the classroom appropriately and effectively.
Albeit; teacher allowed students to use L1 because of the language proficiency level of students
were poor. She totally avoided L1 in the class. Over all, the of way of presenting of the topic was
good and effective for the students.

The instructor wanted to teach reading skill though a passage. The passage was designed according
to the age level of the learner’s proficiency level. Lessons were interesting and motivating. To
make the concept clear; teacher used an interesting video. Moreover, she used the materials very
effectively as well interestingly.

Strengths
The instructor provided chance to students used brainstorming and sometimes allowed students to
make hypothesizes about the given topic before going to activities. Thus she made the classroom
interactive. She provided some interesting activities and students spontaneously participated.

The passage was designed according to the learner’s proficiency level as well as motivating. She
used the materials very effectively within given time. Moreover, instructor used L2 throughout
class time. She provided a very clear lecture and used a video to make the classroom more
interactive.

She provided very effective feedback to the students. She invited randomly students to read out
the passage. One of the students demanded use L1 but she made him clear with easy vocabulary.

Wish list
After observed this classroom, I have not any specific wish list because the instructor was met the
purpose what she intended to teach. Then, the reading passage which was given to the students

was so much easy. There was no written lesson plan. She allowed students to talk with native
language, it should be avoided.
Overall the class was good and instructor met the purpose.

What I have learnt from these two classroom observation

From these classrooms observation; I have learnt about how to start a class, how to ask stimulating
questions to involve the students. One thing should mention here, how to teach new vocabulary
though the topic is very familiar.

To know the effect of brainstorming in the classroom and what types of activities should follow
and are not to follow. For a effective there should have a lesson plan which contain the clear
direction about what intend to teach.

From these observation, I have learnt that material should be authentic as well motivating so that
students enjoy the lesson and class time.

I have also learnt a thing which always help to become a good teacher that how to maintain the
class and how to deal with students individually. Lastly, I mention one thing so materials should
be authentic otherwise the class will not effective.
CLASSROOM OBSERVATION REPORT

Classroom Observation—3
Instructor: XYZ

Place of observation: Recorded classroom

Grade: Primary level

Number of students: 32 (thereabout)

Topic: Speaking

Class length: 16:19minutes

Introduction

This report is done based on the recorded class observed. The class was conducted by Mrs. XYZ
and the participants of the class belonged to primary school.

The classroom was not well decorated rather it’s a little bit crowded.

What she taught

The instructor started the class very interestingly; she welcomed every student with smile. It was
a speaking class, how to speak English in daily life conversation.

She used relevant objects for the students to speak in English. She started with showing objects
such as mobile phone, dolls, different types of toys and end up with some pictures. The instructor
used her materials so that students could relate easily to speak spontaneously. In teaching to choice
the materials according to age level of the students one of the major factor as I found it in her
teaching materials what she had chosen.

What did I find good in teaching

I appreciate that she made the class very interesting by using relevant and fascinating materials
which she designed very carefully.
CLASSROOM OBSERVATION REPORT

She involved every student by asking some stimulating questions and students enjoyed it and
participated in. Lastly she gave an assignment and topic of the assignment was interesting; it’s
about to draw a picture as your own then write few sentences about the pictures. Moreover, she
mentioned that the picture should be related to any kind of festival.

What did I find need to apply

Students made grammatical mistake when they talked in target language. But I noticed that the
instructor did not make it correct rather she ignored.

So far I know, errors can be habit as SLA theories said. So she should have made them correct.

To Sum up
Observation is an important part of learning how to teach. Much of what student-teachers need to
be aware of cannot be learned solely in the university class. Therefore, classroom observation
presents an opportunity to see real-life teachers in real-life teaching situations. In their reflections,
many of our teacher friends mention their observations and how these observations influence the
way they plan and teach. Teachers are forever reflecting and making decisions, and when they see
someone else in action, in as much as they are seeing someone else, they are almost simultaneously
seeing themselves. This means that observation is important at every stage of a teacher’s career.
