MATH 161, Homework Set 4 Name

This document contains the homework problems for MATH 161. The problems involve setting up integrals to calculate the area of planar regions bounded by curves, setting up integrals to calculate the volume of solids obtained by rotating regions about axes and lines, and comparing volumes of solids rotated about different lines. Students are asked to set up but not solve many of the integrals. Some problems involve sketching the regions to aid in visualizing and setting up the integrals.

MATH 161, Homework Set 4

Name:

1) Set up, but do not solve, two different integrals which both represent the area of the finite
region bounded by the curves y = x2 and y = 3x3 . (One integral should be a dx integral, the
other dy).

2) Set up, but do not solve, an integral which represents the area of the finite region bounded
by the curves y = 5x − x2 and y = x. (It could either be a dx integral or a dy integral).

3) Find the area of the finite region bounded by the curves y = x2 and y = x. (You may
want to sketch the region).

4) Find the area of the finite region bounded by the curves y = x3 and y = 5x2 . (You may
want to sketch the region).

5) Set up, but do not solve, a dy integral which computes the area of the finite region bounded
by the curves y = |x|, and y = 1 − x2 . (It can’t be a dx integral!).

6) Find the area of the finite region bounded by the curves y = x2 − 4x and y = 2x − x2 .
(You may want to sketch the region).

7) Set up, but do not solve, an integral which represents the volume of the solid produced by
rotating the finite region bounded by the curves y = x and y = x2 around the x-axis.

8) Set up, but do not solve, an integral which represents the volume of the solid produced by
rotating the finite region bounded by the curves y = x and y = x2 around the y-axis.

9) Set up, but do not solve, an integral which represents the volume of the solid produced by
rotating the finite region bounded by the curves y = x and y = x2 around the line x = 3.

10) Set up, but do not solve, an integral which represents the
√ volume of the solid produced
by rotating the finite region bounded by the curves y = x3 , y = x around the line y = −7.

11) Compute the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by the curves
y = 1 − (1/4)x, y = 0, x = 1, and x = 2 around the x-axis.

12) Compute the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by the curves
y = 1 − (1/4)x, y = 0, x = 1, and x = 2 around the line y = 5.

13) Compute the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by the curves
y = ex , y = 0, x = 0, x = 1, around the line x = 2.

14)Compute the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region bounded by the curves
y = ex , y = 0, x = 0, x = 1, around the line y = −1.

15) Which produces the solid with greater volume: rotating the region bounded by the curves
y = sin(x), x = 0, x = π, and y = 0 around the line y = 0, or around the line y = 1? Justify
your answer.
