3.2 Career Paths

1.1.2 Identify the scope of career opportunities and the requirements for education,

training, certification, licensure, and experience.

Looking ahead and planning the next step in life, I have many things to consider. My goal

is to have a career as an elementary school teacher. In order to achieve this goal, I must answer

many questions and perform a series of tasks. I need to consider how I will fit into this career,

what my opportunities are and what my education options and needs are.

After taking different self assessments, like the 16Personalities test, I discovered that I

am extraverted, observant, practical and feeling (evidence 3.2.1) . These characteristics bring out

my strengths and my weaknesses, which can be seen in my evidence. These qualities help me in

one way or another, they will contribute to getting me to my career goal. I will be able to connect

with my students and be able to not only educate them academically, but also socially. On the

other hand, my weaknesses can hurt me, but I can learn from them as well. In addition to the

personality tests, I also took career path tests. According to the tests, I would fit well in the

education field because being a good listener and enthusiastic are two characteristics needed for

the job (evidence 3.2.1). Based on the end results, it is seen that in my own workplace I would

have good social order and harmony in my classroom. I would expect authority and make sure

every student understands what is going on (evidence 3.2.1). As a teacher, I would be good at

creating and maintaining a secure, stable and friendly environment for my students.

There are many opportunities that can help get me ready for a teaching career. In high

school, I have taken many classes that can help me get to my goal. I have taken higher level core

classes (honors classes), college credit classes (AP classes) and a few electives that contribute to

working on skills needed to be a teacher. These elective courses include speech, etymology,

journalism and teacher academy. By taking Teacher Academy, I dove deeper into education and

learned a lot about the career. I chose to take these higher level classes and electives to push

myself to learn more and work hard to be successful. I believe that with the help of these classes

I will be prepared and ready for what comes after high school and where my career path leads me

to next. I hope to attend college and take classes for my specific career, for instance, Early

Childhood Development, Instructional Planning and Classroom Management (evidence 3.2.5).

Those are just a few of the classes I have to take in college. Taking those classes and working

toward my Master’s Degree in teaching, I plan to work in the elementary setting, possibly fifth

grade math or science, in a known school district in Ohio (evidence 3.2.5).

In order to become a teacher, you need to go through a significant amount of education.

You need to acquire a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Teaching, you need to have a various

number of required skills, and a state teaching license (evidence 3.2.2). In order to acquire all of

that, you need to attend a college that can accommodate all requirements. Some of the colleges

that can offer me that include Miami University, Ohio University and many more (evidence

3.2.3). During college I will shadow teachers to gain more experience in the classroom, and at

the end of my senior year in college I will student teach. The state of Ohio requires you to

complete the Ohio teacher preparation program and the Ohio Assessments for Educators

(OAE)(evidence 3.2.3). I would then have to pass background checks and get approved to teach,

then apply for initial licensure, called a four-year resident educator license, through the Ohio

Department of Education (evidence 3.2.4). Once I have completed and achieved all of the

requirements, I can then proceed to applying for a teaching position in a school district.

The teaching career path isn’t the easiest. There’s a lot of effort and hard work that needs

to be put into it in order to be successful. My personality has to be just right for my students and

my classroom environment. I have to take advantage of the opportunities offered to me, that will

help me work towards my career goal. For the education part, there are many objectives that

need to be met and completed in order to move forward throughout my career path. I could’ve

chosen other opportunities/positions in education such as a special education teacher or middle

school teacher. But my personality and current opportunities led me to having the goal of

becoming an elementary school teacher.
