Foundations of Education

1. As a teacher we need much knowledge to the following:

a. Motivation
 Motivation is the reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving
in a particular way. It is the general desire or willingness of
someone to do something. It brings out the interest of the learners
about the lesson or a topic. We, teachers need much knowledge
about this for us to be able to caught the attention of our learners
and to arouse their interest so that they will learn better and for
learning to take place. When the learner is motivated he/she will do
his/her best to participate in the class thus learning occurs. It is not
only the learners who need to be motivated but also us teachers so
that we can teach well to our learners with love and passion.

b. Individual Differences
 No two individuals can be exactly alike. Even identical twins have
their own characteristics and differences. The rate of development
is not the same for all individuals. Some develop and learn faster
than the others. Learning is most effective when differences in
learner’s language, intelligence, cultural and social behavior are
taken into account. Knowing the differences of our learners is very
important so that we can identify which method, technique and
material to use to cater their needs. We should know each of them
and treat them as a unique child for us not judge or compare our
learners. We should understand and respect their differences.

c. Learning
 Education is a continuous process. We, educators should not stop
learning and continue engaging ourselves in different activities like
seminars or training that will make us more knowledgeable or
intelligent in our field. We need to continue learning so that we will
be able to response to the increasingly complex society and a
rapidly changing technology-based economy, schools are being
asked to educate the most diverse student body in our history to
higher academic standards than ever before. It is our duty as an
educators to impart knowledge to our learners. We need much
knowledge about learning so that everything we say to our pupils is
correct, useful and important. We also need to understand subject
matter deeply and flexibly so that we can help students create
useful cognitive maps, relate ideas to one another, and address
misconceptions. We need to see how ideas connect across fields
and to everyday life. And, we need to know about curriculum
resources and technologies to connect our students with sources of
information and knowledge that allow them to explore ideas,
acquire, synthesize information, and frame and solve problems.

d. Personality
 According to wikipidia personality is a set of individual differences
that are affected by the development of an individual: values,
attitudes, personal memories, social relationships, habits, and
skills. Each of us have our own personality. Since people differ in
many ways, it is very important us teachers to know the
personalities of our learners so that we will know how to get along
with them and for us to be able to understand them. Good or bad
teachers should understand, respect, and accept each learners and
consider their personalities in teaching them.

2. Discuss 2 social problems that are very important at present.

Cyber Bullying
 Internet plays a very important role in our society today. Through
internet we are able to communicate face to face with our relatives
and families abroad. It makes our work lighter and we can use this
to make friends around the world. But, internet can also make one’s
life miserable. Bullies and mean children have been around forever,
but technology now gives them a new platform for their actions. It is
very rampant today that young people use this technology to bully
others. Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, threaten,
embarrass, or target another person. Because of freedom of
speech young people state or rant in social media by means of
posting their thoughts without thinking the impact of their words to
the person they are pertaining to. They upload videos or pictures
that can degrade others. Some youths will also post something
negative to a person then everyone using internet will be able to
read it and comment their opinions also. This can affect not only the
emotional aspect of the bullied person but also its mental, social
and physiological aspects. It lowers the self-esteem of a child and it
can be the reason for them to take suicide.
Out of School Youth
 Education is very important. It is the only thing other people cannot
take away from you. It is the solution to combat poverty. It is
expensive but it is a very good investment. But we are aware that in
our country lots of children and youths are not attending school.
Possible reasons are; first, lack of money, parents are not able to
send their children to school. There are programs of the
government but still it is not enough for them. Second, some out of
school youth prefer to work to help their parents and to earn for
living. And lastly, some parents did not understand the benefits they
can have through the k-12 program of the government. Some of
them takes it as a burden because of the additional years in
studying.
