Heat and Mass Transfer Assignment-1
ASSIGNMENT-1
1) The wall of a cold room is composed of three layer. The outer layer is brick 30 cm thick. The
middle layer is cork 20cm thick, the inside layer is cement 15 cm thick. The temperature of the
outside air is 25° C and on the inside air is -20° C. The film co-efficient for outside air and brick is
55.4 W/m2K.Film co-efficient for inside air and cement is 7 W/m2 K. Find heat flow rate. Take k
for brick = 2.5 W/mK ,k for cork = 0.05 W/mK ,k for cement = 0.28 W/mK.
2) All external wall of a house is made up of 10 cm common brick (k = O.7 W/mK) followed by a
4cm layer of gypsum plaster (k = 0.48 W/mK). What thickness of Loosely packed insulation(k =
0.065 W/mK) should be added to reduce the heat loss through, the wall by 80%
3) The wall of a furnace is made up of 250 mm fire clay of thermal conductivity 1.05W/mK, 120
mm thick of insulation brick of conductivity, O.15 W/mK anti 200 mm thick red brick of
conductivity 0.85 W/mK. The inner and outer surface temperatures of wall are 850° C and 65° C
respectively. Calculate the temperatures at the contact surfaces.
4) A furnace wall made up of 7.5 cm of fire plate anti O.65 cm of mild steel plate. Inside surface
exposed to hot gas at 650° C and outside air temperature 27° C. The convective heat transfer co-
efficient for inner side is 60 W/m2K. The convective heat transfer co-efficient for outer side is 8
W/m2K. Calculate the heat lost per square meter area of the furnace wall and also find outside
surface temperature.
5) A hollow cylinder 5 cm inner diameter and 10cm inner diameter has inner surface temperature
of 200° C, and outer surface temperature of 100° C. Determine heat flow through the cylinder
per meter length. Also determine the temperature of the point half way between the inner and
outer Surface. Take k = 1W/mK.
6) A thick walled tube of stainless steel k = 77.85 kJ/hrm°C, 25 mm ID and 50mm OD is covered
with a 25 mm layer of asbestos k = 0.88 kJ/hrm°C. If the inside wall temperature of the pipe is
maintained at 550°C and the outside of the insulator at 45° C. Calculate the heat loss per meter
length of the pipe.
7) A carbon steel (k =55W/mK) 90 mm long rod with cross sectional area 5 x 10-3m2 and permitter
0.69 m is attached to a plane wall which is maintained at temperature of 400° C . The
surrounding environment is 50° C and heat transfer co-efficient is 90 W/m 2K. Calculate the heat
dissipated by the rod.
8) Aluminum fins 1.5 cm wide and 10 mm thick are placed on a 2.5cm diameter tube to dissipate
the heat. rile tube surface temperature is 170° C ambient temperature is 20° C. Calculate the
heat loss per fin. Take h = 130 W/m2 C and K== 200 W/m oC for aluminium.
9) An aluminium plate (k = 160 w/moc, p == 2790kg/m3 Cp == 0.88 KJ/kg°C) of thickness L = 3cm at
a uniform temperature of 225°C is suddenly immersed at time t=0 in a well stirred fluid
maintained at a constant temperature T == 25°C . Take h = 320 W/m2°C. Determine the time h e
required for the centre of the plate to reach 50°C
10) Derivation of Cartesian polar coordinates.
