Stress has become a major concern for people of all walks of life. The fast pace of modern life is taking a toll on physical and mental health as it leads to stress-induced diseases. Stress Management

The fast pace of life is taking its toll on every city dweller, right from students to home
makers and workers to managers, everyone is hit by stress. Modern technological
development and communication aids are adding to the stress because of their high speed.
Students find travelling, exams, admissions etc. are at times too stressful for students, as
well as parents living hectic lifestyles. Stressed individuals are paying a heavy toll in
terms of health and wellbeing as they are more prone to stress induced diseases such as
headaches, upset stomachs, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease,
and strokes. Most people get trapped in the vicious circle of stress induced disease and
find it difficult to tackle it at a later stage. Hence it is very important for us to learn to
manage stress.

What is Stress?

Stress is an individual's perception and assessment of the environment. It depends on how


one perceives the situation. The positive perception is called eustress while negative
perception will lead to distress. The amount of stress at which each individual functions
most effectively is unique to each individual and it is known as their optimum stress
level (OSL). Any response, mental or physical, which adversely affects performance, is
called a negative stress response.

Anything that creates stress is called a stressor. There are different types of lifestyle
stressors:

• Performance stressors. These are situations where one is stressed to perform.


For example, driving a car, public speaking, performance appraisal, the big events
in one's life (eg. exams, marriage) etc.
• Threat stressors. These are situations perceived as dangerous. For example, riots,
war, high risk sport, accidents etc.
• Boredom stressors. These are situations which are perceived and assessed as
lacking in physical or mental stimulation. For example, household chores, routine
factory work etc.
• Frustration stressors. These are situations which are perceived and assessed as
being undesirable but beyond one's power to control. For example, government
taxation.
• Bereavement stressors. Loss of relationship, death of a loved one, losing a job,
possession or reputation, loss of dignity etc.
• Physical stressors. Actual physical damage. For example, breaking limbs,
suffering from disease or infection, working in conditions where extreme
temperature and pollution exists that cannot be avoided.
How do we Proceed?

1. Become aware of your stressors.


2. Bring your attention to your breath
3. Change your attitudes
4. Set goals. Practice SMART Goal setting - Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Realistic and Time-bound
5. Manage your time
6. Improve your EQ.
7. Take care of your body
8. Take it easy. - Mix leisure with work. Take breaks and get away whenever you
can. Develop some mutually supportive friendships and relationships.
Frustrations, failures, and sorrows are part of our life, and we learn from them.
Always be kind and gentle with yourself - be a friend to yourself.

The word Stress is derived from the Latin word “Stringere", stress was popularly
used in the seventeenth century to mean hardship, strain, adversity or
Affliction. It was used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to denote
force, pressure, strain or strong efforts with reference to an object or person.

In modern times Stress has become a Buzzword and legitimate concern for people of
all walks of life. No one is immune to stress. Straight from the birth till death an
individual is exposed to various to stress. Stress is such a field, which can never
be avoided.

A Stress acts as a force on body to produce strain. It is an adaptive response to a


situation that is challenging or retaining to a person.

There are two sides of stress A positive and Negative side

A Force that deviates from the normal functioning is distress, --- a negative side.

A positive side is called a Eutress, which refers to healthy, positive, constructive


outcome of stressful event .It is an experience that motivates people to achieve
goals and attain success in every field of there life.

Outcomes of Stress: There are certain outcomes of stress. The stress results as an
hindrance in an individuals performance, his work profile, his ability to work,
Migraine, Fatigue, heart disease, miscarriage and also his personal life .

There are certain major sources or causes of stress which are listed as:

• Environmental Causes: These are the factors to which an employee responds


includes fast technological change, Family demands economic and financial
conditions, etc.
• Organizational Causes: These come in the forms of organizational policies,
procedures, structures, etc.
• Group Causes: These would include the lack of group cohesiveness, lack of
social support and interpersonal conflict.
• Individual Causes: These are the roles played by the individual in an
organization. This would include Role plays, Workload. Etc.

The research evidence shows that stress is both helpful and harmful to task
performance. We can also say, stress is both a friend and enemy.Absence and too
low level of stress does not stimulate the employee to work more or and perform
better increasing research evidences show that increase in stress level till its mild
level serves as a stimulus to activate employee to respond to the challenges of task
and, in turn, facilitates employee's task performance.

The concept of Stress is from the natural sciences. Stress is a force which act in a body to
produce strain. It is becoming common in organization because of increasing job
complexity and economic pressure. There is a need to manage stress, which is both
harmful and useful but ultimately affects the performance of an employee. In competitive
and complex world implementation of strategies is to manage stress, which is a
continuous process and essential aspect in every day life.
