7 Simple Steps to Sleeping Through the Night

Create a Peaceful Nightly

Step 1: Ritual for your baby.

Give your child an ideal

Step 2: bedtime.

Get clear expectations of

Step 3: what your baby’s sleep
should look like.

Revamp & safeguard

Step 4: your baby’s sleep space.

Master the simplest step

Step 5: of sleep training

Crack the code on night

Step 6: feeds.

Guide your baby to sleeping

Step 7: independently.
Create a Peaceful Nightly Ritual for your baby.
Step 1:

Your baby needs a 15-30 minute winding down ritual

at bedtime. This routine allows your baby to relax,
settle and fall asleep easily.
Your bedtime routine should include feeding, bath,
massage, pajamas, and reading a book.
It’s essential that you separate feeding and falling
asleep by 10+ minutes.
Step 2: Give your child an ideal bedtime.

Your baby’s innate bedtime is programmed

for 6:30-8 pm every night.
Your baby’s bedtime should not vary by
more than 15 minutes every night.
Moving bedtime earlier often helps baby
sleep later in the morning.

Step 3: Get clear expectations of what

your baby’s sleep should look like.

Your 5-18 month old needs 11-12 hours sleep

at night and 2-3 hours of napping everyday.
Try to avoid awake times of 4 hours or more.
(For those not yet on one daily nap.)
No individual nap should be longer than 2
hours. Yes, wake your baby!

Step 4: Revamp & safeguard

your baby’s sleep space.

Your baby should always be placed to sleep

on her back- for every nap and during the
night.
Once your baby can independently roll onto
her side or tummy, it’s ok to leave her
there.
When your baby becomes mobile, she’ll
need a bigger sleep space to sleep comfort-
ably at night. Transition your baby out of
the DockaTot, Rock n Play, co-sleeper and
bassinet once she can roll.
Step 5: Master the simplest step of sleep training.

If your baby sits up or pulls to stand during the night, you don’t have to help him
back down each time.
When your baby is awake but quiet during the night, you don’t need to intervene.
You should help your baby into a more comfortable sleeping position if he can’t do it
by himself.

Step 6: Crack the code on

night feeds.

Your 5-12 month old may need 1-2 night

feeds.
Your 13+ month old doesn’t need any
night feeds.
Always double check with your doctor
when weaning or reducing night feeds.
Guide your baby to
Step 7: sleeping independently.

When your baby can fall

asleep on his own at
bedtime, he’ll be able to
sleep longer stretches
overnight.
Your baby needs to go
into his bed awake and
fall asleep without you in
the room in order to sleep
through the night.
All sleep training methods
work, as long as parents
are consistent every
night.

Now that you know the essential steps, you’re

ready to begin!

Focus on each step for a day or two before

beginning the next.

You don’t have to wait until each step is going

“perfectly” before moving on. The steps work
best when done together.
