1) Glacier: A persistent body of dense ice which constantly moves under its own weight.

2) Perpetual : Permanent

3) Mountain pass: The gap between two mountain ranges

4) Himalaya : The Abode of snow

Facts and information:

1) Mount Everest is the highest peak of the world and its height is 8850 mt. It is located in Nepal.

2) The Great Himalayas are also known as Himadri.

3) The first Indian Woman to climb mt. Everest was Bachendri Pal.

4) The Himalayas are the sources of major rivers like Ganga, Indus, Brahmaputra.

5) The Shiwalik means “the belonging to Lord Shiva.

Ans1. The Word Himalaya means “the abode of snow”. The Three parallel ranges of Himalayas are :

Ans3. The Himachal Range of the Himalayas has some beautiful valleys such as Chamba,Kullu and
kangra. The famous hills stations of Shimla, Mussoorie, nainital, Almora and Darjeeling are located in
this range. People from the plains visit these hills stations to escape the summer heat.

Ans4. The Himadri region is very cold throughout the year. This makes it very difficult for the people
to live here. The people of the state keep Kangri, a small pot with burning coal, under their loose
outer garments to keep themselves warm. Tourism is the main source of income in this region.
Women in Sikkim wear a long skirt called baku.
