End each session with this prayer

Prayer for a good life
https://www.turnbacktogod.com/prayer-for-a-good-life/

Grant O merciful God, that I may ardently desire, carefully examine, truly know
and perfectly fulfill those things that are pleasing to You and to the praise and
glory of Your holy name.

Direct my life, O my God, and grant that I might know what you would have me
to do and for me to fulfill it as is necessary and profitable to my soul.

Grant to me, O Lord my God, that I may not be found wanting in prosperity or in
adversity and that I may not be lifted up by one nor cast down by the other.

May I find joy in nothing but what leads to You and sorrow in nothing but what
leads away from You.

May I seek to please no one or fear to displease anyone but only You.

Grant to me, O Lord God,

– a vigilant heart that no subtle speculation may ever lead me from You;
– a noble heart that no unworthy affection may draw me from You;
– an upright heart that no evil purpose may turn me from you.

Give me a steadfast heart that no tribulation may shatter and a free heart that
no violent affection may claim as its own.

And finally, grant me O Lord my God, a mind to know you, diligence to seek you,
wisdom to find you.

Give me a way of life pleasing to You; perseverance to trust and await You in
confidence that I shall embrace You at the last. Amen.

– – – prayer by St. Thomas Aquinas

DEEPEN #2
Ask the students: “Is it easy or difficult to be a follower of Christ in our world
today?
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

Point for discussion:

Following Christ in our world today can be both easy and difficult. Doing the
good can be easy because there are so many “lights” that guide us in
following Christ. Mention some examples…

But it can also be difficult because there are many “shadows” that hinder
us from becoming truly loving like Christ. Mention some examples…

“We live in the worst of time, we live in the best of times.” Do you agree or
disagree? Enumerate things, realities, or situations in our society that
affirm this basic observation. Post three words that highlights your
observation.

A Tale of Two Cities, a novel by Charles Dickens, begins with this description: “It
was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” The documents of the Second
Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP II) begin with a similar description of the
present age. In 1991, when our Church decided to gather her members to reflect
on the “signs of times” she came face to face with the reality of a country of
“lights and shadows. In January 2001, our Church revisited PCP II only to
see that not much has changed. We remained a nation of contradictions. For
example, despite the growing number of religious and civic
organizations, many people seem to have adopted an attitude of indifference
toward our present social problems. The information age that ushered in
greater opportunities for cooperation among communities has given rise to
new forms of abuse and cybercrimes. Violations of human dignity still
increase even as we become more aware of our fundamental rights. Affluence
continues to exist side by side with poverty. Here and now, in this world of
lights and shadows, we are called to
follow Christ.

On one hand, we live in the worst of times because we experience various moral
crises that can overwhelm or even paralyze us into complacency or
inaction. Violence, injustice, extra judicial killing, war on drugs, corruption
in government offices, mafia in Philhealth, can influence us as we make
important choices every
day.

On the other hand, we live is the best of times when we see in these crises a
chance to respond to Christ’s call to be of loving service to others. The
“Bayanihan spirit” that prevailed during the COVID 19 pandemic lockdown and
quarantine is a sure sign of Filipinos sensitivity to the needs of fellow Filipinos
who are suffering because of lack of work and restrictions. People has extended
their hand by providing food, PPE, face mask, face shield and the like to our
frontliners and the vulnerable of the society. Creativity has also sparked during
these times, people designed PPE, face mask, shield, sanitizer and the like.

Work on the “Lights and shadows” worksheet in your Google classroom. Your
task is to list as many “lights and shadows” related to your chosen topic.
It may help to do a bit of research on your topic. Read relevant newspaper or
magazine articles on the issue. Use examples that are relevant to our
experience as Filipinos.
