Chapter 1
Pre-Test
1. Define the term “curriculum” as you understand it. Make a concept web.
The curriculum refers to the lessons learned in a school or in a particular course or
program and the academic material. The curriculum is often described in dictionaries as
the courses offered by a school, but it is seldom used in schools in such a general context.
Curriculum usually refers to the knowledge and abilities that students are required to
acquire, and includes the academic expectations or learning objectives they are expected
to meet; the units and lessons that teachers teach; the activities and tasks assigned to
students; the books, materials, recordings, presentations, and readings used in a course;
and the assessments, examinations, and other tools used to evaluate the learning of
students. An individual teacher’s curriculum, for example, would be the specific learning
standards, lessons, assignments, and materials used to organize and teach a particular
course.
2. Make a clear distinction in your own words between curriculum and
a. A unit of the program is a subject syllabus. The two concepts vary in the way that the
curriculum is a mixture of several variables that helps to prepare an instructional
program, while a syllabus covers the portion of what subjects in a given subject can
be learned.
b. The program is extracted from a syllabus. The list of subjects to be taught and studied
within a particular time or curriculum is concerned, while the job scheme is derived
from the syllabus and broken down into bits to be taken on a term basis.
c. A course is a series of seminars that may consist of material of some kind (e.g. film,
papers, presentations, etc.). A program is a series of courses typically related to a
related subject.
d. The two concepts vary in the way that the curriculum is a mixture of several variables
that helps to prepare an instructional program, while a syllabus covers the portion of
what subjects in a given subject can be learned.

c. The first thing that comes to one’s mind when one hears

to students. Given that it is a set of courses, it determines
subject matter/content, modes of delivery, instructional
materials, and resources. Hence, the curriculum is the
centerpiece of the education process.
e. The curriculum is abstract. It is not easy to grasp and define.
However, it can be studied, understood and analyzed in more
concrete terms.

2. Discuss the Sabre-tooth Curriculum and answer the following:
a. Discuss the sabre-tooth curriculum still exist at present? Give examples of your
evidence.
Answer: For me, until today, the saber tooth program still exists since our educational
system teaches students how to do complex activities of their own and we encourage
them to do the things that will help them exercise their brains and abilities.
b. Describe the kind of curriculum that exist as described in the article.
Answer: In fact, the instruction outlined in the article conveys a message in the form of
the premise "we should teach them how to capture a fish with their hands instead of using
a net."
c. What does the author mean, when he said “A curriculum should be timeless?”
Explain.
Answer: It basically means that our education system can suit and fulfill a function
according to the needs of the moment. Ultimately, our society should make all curricular
choices to suit our interests, rather than individual teachers, school facilities, or districts.
d. What is the difference between education and training?
Answer: The distinction is that the word teaching means the act of imparting to an
individual a specific ability or action that is normally provided to workers at the
organizational stage. Although schooling, anything about an organization that creates a
sense of judgement and logic about workers is a form of structured learning. And to add
to that, in the expectation of acquiring a particular ability, preparation is carried out. This
experience would usually make you more employable. Education is carried out with the
hope of promoting your particular understanding and improving your intelligence.
