The Fundamental Concepts of EFQM: 1. Achieving Balanced Results

The EFQM framework outlines 9 criteria for organizational excellence including leadership, strategy, people, partnerships and resources, processes, and results. The framework is based on 8 fundamental concepts: achieving balanced results, adding value for customers, leading with vision and integrity, managing by processes, succeeding through people, nurturing creativity and innovation, building partnerships, and taking responsibility for sustainability. The criteria are divided into enablers, which are what the organization does, and results, which are what the organization achieves. Improving the enablers through learning and innovation leads to improved results.

The Fundamental Concepts of EFQM

The Fundamental Concepts of Excellence are the underlying principles of the EFQM
Excellence Model which are the essential foundation of achieving Sustainable Excellence
for any organisation. They can be used as the basis to describe the attributes of an excellent
organisational culture. They also serve as a common language for senior management.

1. Achieving Balanced Results

Excellent organisations meet their mission and progress towards their vision through
planning and achieving a balanced set of results that meet both the short and long term
needs of their stakeholders and, where relevant, exceed them.

2. Adding Value for Customers

Excellent organisations know that customers are their primary reason for being and strive to
innovate and create value for them by understanding and anticipating their needs and
expectations.

balanced achievement of organisational and personal goals.

6. Nurturing Creativity & Innovation

continual and systematic innovation by harnessing the creativity of their stakeholders.

7. Building Partnerships
Excellent organisations seek, develop and maintain trusting relationships with various
partners to ensure mutual success. These partnerships may be formed with customers,
society, key suppliers, educational bodies or Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

8. Taking Responsibility for a Sustainable Future

Excellent organisations embed within their culture an ethical mindset, clear values and the
highest standards of organisational behaviour, all of which enable them to strive for
economic, social and ecological sustainability.

The 9 Criteria of EFQM

Through the 9 criteria you can understand and analyse the cause and effect relationships
between what your organisation does and the results you achieve. Five of these criteria are
'Enablers' and four are 'Results'. The 'Enabler' criteria cover what an organisation does and
how it does it. The 'Results' criteria cover what an organisation achieves.

The 9 Criteria are:

1. Leadership
2. Strategy
3. People
4. Partnerships & Resources
5. Processes, Products and Services
6. Customer Results
7. People Results
8. Society Results
9. Key Results

The dynamic nature of the model shows learning, creativity and innovation help in
improving the Enablers that in turn lead to improved Results.
