Instructions: NOTE: The information in this Article is provided as a guidance for performing a BMR restore with the
VMXNET driver. The Networker Administration Guide's section 'Windows BMR limitations and
considerations' documents the limitation with the use of the VMXNET driver with BMR. There could be
other ways to load custom NIC drivers during BMR, this article documents one possible workaround.
1. On a existing test Windows 2012 R2 VM (that has Vmware tools installed) and is using a
VMXnet3 NIC card, add a small 1GB hard disk. Format the drive that was added, and assign a
drive letter like E: to the newly added drive.

2. Copy the VMware drivers required for VMXnet 3 NIC from an existing VM to the host in step 1.
The drivers can be found under:
C:\program files\Common Files\VMware\Drivers.
Copy the driver to the ‘E:\’ drive (the disk that was newly added in Step 1)
For example, if the VM being recovered had C: and E: drive as critical volumes with a size of
60 GB and 50 GB, respectively, then the new VM should have disks of this capacity, or
greater.

4b. Add a NIC to the VM and select the type to be VMXnet 3 NIC
4c. Add another disk to the VM and select ‘existing disk’ from the VMware Wizard
and point it to the disk that was created in Step 1 (the 1 GB disk)

4d. Point the CD/DVD of the VM to the ISO image for the BMR that was downloaded from the
EMC support website.

NOTE: The network information does not show the driver for the VMXNet3 as the BMR
ISO image does not contain this VMware Driver.

NOTE: Here the C: drive is the 1 GB disk that was added that contains the drivers for
the VMXnet3. Select the C:\ drive.

11. Click ‘Next’ and you get ‘Configure hostname and Network’ screen. Populate the
required fields.
NOTE: The hostname would be the original hostname that you are trying to recover. This name will
be used by Networker to browse the backups for BMR. The IP address will be the IP required to
communicate with the Networker server.
12. Click next and you will see the following screen ‘Available Disks’ after the NIC is
configured :

13a. Test communication with the Networker server by pinging the IP address of the
server or the hostname.
If the hostname of the Networker server does not resolve to a IP address, update
the ‘hosts’ file under the path ‘X:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc’
14. Go back to the GUI screen and click ‘next’ and you get ‘select Networker server’

NOTE: the warning of disk will be formatted and existing data will be lost. Ensure no disks with data
are attached to the VM.
