1. INTRODUCTION:
In this report It’s described a Seismic FEM analysis of a Dry Vacuum Cast Coil Transformer according to
loads coefficients method of Dunkerque LNG Terminal Specification (*) (Doc. Nº GDK-0-090-8302-CT-G-
0003).
Firstly, It describes FEM modeling process and later will be presented load cases, conclusion and
results. Seismic analysis will have two main phases:
First consist in checking of the FEM model with own weight load. For this purpose a Static Analysis has
been simulated for check right transmission of stresses and displacements.
Secondly consist in making Seismic Zone UBC 2 Analysis by Load Coefficients Method defined in
Dunkerque Specification (*) with accelerations defined in the ABB technical datasheet 0.2g in horizontal
and 0.1g in vertical. This analysis is realized with software MSC Nastran Patran.
Based on these results we conclude whether the model is suitable for installation according to
customer's requirement.
1.1. GEOMETRY:
The geometry of the transformer has been simplified, analyzing only electrical parts or main
structural frame, the enclosure has been discarded from the analysis for having protective
function of the environmental conditions that will have the transformer.
It also has attempted to reduce the parts to keep only the basic structural frame. This way
get a model adjusted to the reality that requires reasonable computational analysis and allow
us to work in better.
Based on the 3D geometry of the transformer in Creo Parametric 2.0 have been analyzed
the structurally relevant parts of the transformer.
1.2. MATERIALS:
The mechanical properties of the materials used for the F.E.M. model are shown in Table 1.
It is worth mentioning that the coils have homogenized properties of an isotropic material.
The complete finite element mesh is composed of 98690 elements and 119450 nodes.
Triangular shell elements have been avoided in the mesh as shown in the pictures to
optimize mesh.
The main beams (clamps, transformer foots and omega profiles) has been meshed with
enough detail by shell elements CQUAD4 to analyze their behavior.
The core has been designed using tridimensional elements CHEXA of magnetic sheet.
The coils have been considered uniform and isotropic with 3D elements with properties
CHEXA got during the encapsulation / winding.
Coil supports have been simulated using CBUSH elements joining the anchor point of the
tensor with the clamp and the supporting coil area using MPC RBE3. In these elements is
applied a equivalent coil support stiffness, K eq calculated in three directions X, Y, Z.
The GP03 core supports, bottom and lateral, has been meshed with CBUSH elements too.
Tie rods and main screwed joints have been modeled using BEAM elements.
LV leads have been designed using one-dimensional elements type BAR with square section
160 x 10 as shown in the picture below.

It will simulate the installation of the transformer in the worst installation scenario,
supporting all the weight on the wheels locked, for static analysis.
It has been restricted translation and rotation in X, Y and Z at the transformer foot joint
zone with the wheels, through a master node with rigid body element RBE2 in the three
directions as seen in the next picture.
2. LOAD CASES:
The way to check the FEM mesh is calculate the FEM model under gravity inertial load
(9.81 m / sec²), embedding the model in the wheel supports.
The results will also give an idea of the correct dimensioning of the parts during the
transformer life.

To confirm the suitability of the ABB transformer model that has been designed, at the
request of the customer is checked statically transformer with maximum horizontal
acceleration of 0.2g and maximum vertical acceleration 0.1 g.
All of them simulated again in the worst case scenario, embedding the transformer in
transformer foot points where the wheels is supporting.
The results give us information about the dimensioning of the pieces to the worst
possible acceleration during an Earthquake, this approach is more conservative than
performing a seismic analysis against a response spectrum.

3. CONCLUSIONS
Starting from the results shown in section 4, we can say that the FEM model is consistent and
it can be concluded that the transformer is perfectly sized to withstand the seismic maximum
according to seismic zone UBC 2 for the seismic coefficient method load.
It also noted that given the complexity of the model has been refined mesh in the stress
concentration points but that has been studied particularly its influence and has been shown
to refine the mesh stresses value decreased, converging the graph Stress. Vs Number of nodes.
In any case the values of these concentrations also are always less than the Elastic Limit of
the materials again in all the cases analyzed.
