Build A Boat That Floats - Stem Design Brief
Build A Boat That Floats - Stem Design Brief
This STEM design brief is aimed at students in year 2 (7-8 years old). This project will aid
children in their understanding that different materials can be combined for a particular
purpose (ACSSU031). Students will research which materials are appropriate for building a
boat that will float on water for an extended period of time and hold a particular weight.
They will then need to design and construct their boat using at least three different recycled
materials.
Design brief
Your task is to design and build a boat that floats on water for 10 minutes, and can hold the
weight of 10 marbles without sinking. The boat must be made using at least three different
recycled materials. You may use more recycled materials if you like and non-recycled
materials. Your boat needs to be aesthetically pleasing (needs to look nice).
Materials
- You will need to research which materials will float and are waterproof.
- The boat should be made from at least three different recycled materials, but you
may use more if you like.
- Glue (PVA, hot glue gun)
- Masking tape
- Scissors / Stanley knife
Technological considerations
- You will need to research a range of boats and their design. Consider why they have
been made this way and with these materials.
- Research which materials are waterproof and will float on water.
- Adults may need to assist in the construction of the boat for example when using the
Stanley knife and hot glue gun.
- You will need to draw your boat design and provide a reason as to why you have
made these choices in your design.
- You should consider aesthetics (how it looks) and include this in your design.
Task Considerations
- Students may need adult assistance in the construction of their boat. For example
when using the Stanley knife and hot glue gun.
- Students should design the boat themselves and select materials without adult
assistance
