Maya Lab 2

The document provides security instructions for working with computers, including examining the computer for integrity before turning it on, maintaining an optimal distance from the monitor, and not touching wires or putting liquids on the computer. It then describes a practical work lesson in Autodesk Maya that teaches how to model objects using surface and polygonal modeling, including using a polygon cylinder and extrude command to model a rook chess piece from an image plane. Students are tasked with creating the remaining king and knight chess pieces using extrusion and references for further information are provided.

Laboratory work № 2

Security instructions for working with computers:

Before turning on of the computer, you must examine the personal computer on integrity of the computer case, that
wires don't disturb work and movement;
Optimum distance of eyes up to the monitor during working time (60-70 cm.);
It is strictly forbidden:
To touch to wires, forks, sockets, move of the equipment during working time;
To work at the computer wet hands or in wet clothes;
To put any subjects or to spill liquids on the computer or the keyboard;
At detection of defects in operation of the computer, a smell of burning, you have to stop work, switch off the computer
and tell to the teacher.

LEARN: WORKING IN AUTODESK MAYA. MODELING OBJECTS (continuance).

THE PURPOSE OF PRACTICAL WORK – take knowledge about creating objects in program using Surface
and Polygonal modelling.

1. In last lesson you create chess using curves and Revolve command.
2. One way of object modeling is using Polygons and Extrude command.
3. Open the program Maya.
4. Load the image of Rook chess in Front view, using Image plane button.
5. Select Polygon Cylinder and arrange it front Rook chess. Settings of Cylinder:
Height - 1, Subdivisions Caps – 0.
6. RBM click on the cylinder and select Face. Select top cylinder face (it is more
convenient to select a face in persp view). Then you will work in persp view.
7. Turn Main Menu to Polygons .
8. Select Extrude Options
(click on a box) in Edit Mesh menu. In Extrude Face Options
window set Thickness to 0.2 value. Click Apply and Close buttons.
9. You will see three fields for extrude setting:
a. Thickness – specifies the depth of the selected face.
b. Offset – extracting and duplicating faces
c. Divisions - controls number of sections along the
length of the extrusion.
10. Click on Offset and drag to the right. The selection
shrinks, then move the narrowed selection down slightly.

11. Then click to Extrude

button and drag offset to the left,

expand the selection.
12. Use Thickness to scale the
extrusion vertically.
13. And so, using these three
fields, draw a Rook shape from the polygon.
14. Extrude top face of figure,
narrow it down and extrude down into the shape.
15. On the rim, select by holding Shift key three faces through two faces and extrude
them.
16. RBM click on the chess figure and select Edge. Double click on any edge you can
change figure using Move and Scale tools.
17. Assign white or black material to the figure.
18. In Renderer View window select renderer – Mental ray.
Note: Since all chess pieces are lathe objects, you can create a base using curves.
19. Then execute the Modify - Convert - NURBS to Polygons Options command with settings: Tessellation
method - Control Points.
20. Select the converted figure and execute Mesh-Fill Hole command for figure closing.
21. Then from Polygons, using extrusion, create the upper parts of the shapes and using Mesh - Combine
command combine them, so that they become one whole.

Task
Create the remaining shapes of King and Knight (you can use any video lesson from Internet for creating Knight)
