Improving the Livelihoods of Smallholder Fruit Farmers in Soroti District, Teso Sub Region,

Eastern Uganda Region

November 2019.

Main activities of our new organization.

The pilot organisation (AgroBloom (U) Limited), will work with smallholder farmers in the
production and marketing of quality, superior fruits such as oranges by Identifying and mobilising
farmers in Soroti District who are interested in growing oranges on a large scale, training the
registered farmers on best farm practices to boost their production capacity, purchasing quality
seedlings and distribution of the seedlings to the farmers, monitoring the planting of the seedlings. We
will sensitize the factory owners about the presence of the farmers and negotiate on the market price
with the factory owners, carry out field visits to ensure the quality of the produce is not compromised
and we will harvest and transport the produce to the factory.
The main barriers that currently prevent people from accessing our proven intervention

 Ugandan farmers in the Teso Sub region have continued to face challenges penetrating
the local standards due to poor practices.
 Today, most small holder farmers are ignorant on agricultural practices. Therefore,
their orange produce is rejected by the newly established fruit factory in Soroti
District for not meeting the standards, and many farmers are forced to cut down their
oranges.

- How does your distribution model specifically overcome these barriers?

To use a market-based, commercial solution in addressing this challenge, our pilot
organisation (AgroBloom (U) Ltd), will be involved in training our registered farmers, providing
them with quality seedlings, Sensitising the farmers on the standards required by the fruit
factory and the fruit sizes required.
What is the most fundamental part of your new organization that you need to prove will work during
this pilot program? (We think the purpose of a pilot is to test the fundamentals of your business / the
basis of your value proposition on a small scale, and we want to know which part of your model you
will focus on).

 Organising trainings on best farm practices to boost the production capacity of our farmers.
 Our support team will go on field monitors and will record the production stages of each
farmer to determine the harvesting time of their other perishable produce and also to ensure
that the quality of the produce is not compromised.
 Establishing offtake agreements with juice processing companies, exporters and
supermarkets, in order to provide a reliable and convenient market for our registered
smallholder farmers.

What is the expected impact of your work? We recommend writing:

- 1-2 sentences summarizing your marginal impact (ie, the impact you will make compared to the
status quo) at a high level, and at an individual or household level. For example, your work might
reduce the rates of HIV infections by X% countrywide; and for an individual, could save 7 DALYs
(disability adjusted life years, which is a way to measure the cost effectiveness of a poverty
intervention).
Our organisation will benefit farmers, consumers and the environment and will have a high impact in
improving the nutritional status and the financial strength of over 300 farmers and could improve the
livelihood of each individual small holder farmer by 50 % in Teso sub region Eastern Uganda Region.
Outcome table: Over the next 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years, how many proven interventions
do you plan to distribute? And how many people will you directly help? We recommend
sharing this as a simple table.

Outcomes Number Period

Farmers and farmers associations registered 50 3 months
Farmers trained on best farm practices 300 1 year
Farmer family members positively impacted by the 500 or more 1 year
project activities
Total cultivated land size 300 acres [121 hectares] 2 years
Production capacity of oranges 2,420 tonnes 1 year

2-3 sentences summarizing a rough draft of how much money you need for your pilot
program, and what the 3-5 major expenses are expected to be?

The Organization requires a total contribution of US$18,000 which can be summarized as follows:
Personnel (including employees/consultants/etc. (Kampala/Uganda)- $9,000, Logistics, Transport
and Storage- $5000, Training and Workshops- $4000)
Long Term vision

Our Long-term vision is to obtain proper certification needed to meet the Codex Alimentarius
Commission (CAC) standards an international food standards body which was formed by the Food
and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) so that we can
export our fruit to the European market.

- A Table that lists: - All of the people on your team - Their job title responsibilities - Their location
during the pilot - Any other professional commitments they have during the pilot - If not local to your
