Improving the Livelihoods of Smallholder Fruit Farmers in Soroti District, Teso Sub

Region, Eastern Uganda Region

Main Activities:
Agro Bloom (U) Limited will Identify and mobilise fruit farmers interested in or currently growing
citrus specifically oranges on one acer of land and more. The farmers will be trained on good citrus
farming practices and orange seedlings will be purchased and distributed to the farmers. Agro Bloom
will monitor farm preparations and planting of the seedlings. Sensitization meetings will be held with
the factory owners about the farmers and price negotiates will also held to ensure that the farmers get
a fair price. Monthly farm visits will be conducted to monitor growth and ensure the quality of the
produce is not compromised. Support in harvest and transport the produce to the factory.

Main barriers:
The main barriers that currently prevent people from accessing our proven intervention include;
Limited knowledge on good fruit farming practices, limited access to quality seedlings and low costs
offered by factory owners to farmers.

Over coming barriers:


Our model will overcome these barriers by equipping the selected farmers with good fruit farming
practices through trainings, provide quality seedlings to farmers and negotiate fair prices with factory
owners on behalf of the farmer.

Fundamental part of our pilot:


The most fundamental part of this pilot program is equipping farmers with good fruit farming
practices. With these acquired skills, the farmers will produce market standard fruits and also pass on
the skills to other famers in their areas.

Our marginal impact:


At a high level, our work will increase on the GDP of the country, at individual and household level,
our work will increase on the level of income for the famers thus reducing on their poverty level.

Money Needed:
The Organization needs US$18,860 and the major expenses will including facilitating training
sessions for farmers, purchase of quality seedlings and monitoring the work being done by the trained
farmers.

Long-term vision:
The Long-term vision of the organisation is to support farmers meet the Codex Alimentarius
Commission (CAC) certification so that we can access market for their fruits outside the county.
