Uses
The past perfect continuous has a
variety of uses:

1. To talk about something that was in


progress recently before or up to a
past point in time.
Example:
We had been waiting for two hours
before we were seated at the
restaurant.

2. To describe an activity that


happened over a period up to a
particular past time, or until shortly
before it.
Example:
He’d been playing tennis so when he
got home he took a shower.
3. To explain the cause of something
in the past.
Example:
I was exhausted because I had been
working 60 hour weeks.

4. To indicate continuous activities


and evidence to support the idea
that they happened.
Example:
Although she was smiling she had
clearly been crying. (perhaps her eyes
were wet and red)
