SAES-Q-001 (Criteria For The Design & Construction of Concrete Structures)
4. Definitions
Hot weather concrete : accelerate the rate of moisture loss or rate of cement hydration of
freshly mixed concrete
Self-consolidating concrete : fresh concrete that can flow and consolidate within formwork under its
own weight.
Mass Concrete : any volume of structural concrete in which a combination of dimensions of the
member being cast.
5. General Requirements
•Structural concrete with a minimum dimension equal to or greater than 1200mm should be
considered mass concrete.
•Environmental engineering concrete structures design to store liquids shall be leak tested as per
ACI 350.1
•Cast-in-place structural concrete reinforced with Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars shall comply
with ACI 440.5
6. Quality Control
7. Materials
•Cementitious Materials
-Portland Cement (ASTM C150/C150M, Type 1 or Type V)
-Fly Ash (ASTM C618, Class F)
-Natural Pozzolan (ASTM C618)
-Cementitious materials shall be tested monthly basis or when changing the source of
materials
•Reinforcement
-shall be deformed steel (ASTM A615/A615M), Grade 20
-coated reinforcements , Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) as per 09-SAMSS-106.
-welded wire reinforcement shall be plain wire as per ASTM A1064/A1064M.
-Tie wire (black annealed wire), 16 gauge (1.29mm) min., coated with epoxy.
-Manufacturing, Fabrication, handling, placement and storage of steel reinforcement
shall in accordance with ACI 318.
•Masonry Unit
-Hollow and soild load-bearing (ASTM C90) for exterior walls.
-Hollow and solid non-load bearing (ASTM C129) for interior walls.
-Minimum Compressive strength of concrete masonry units shall be 13.1 Mpa (1900 psi)
•Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) - ASTM C1116/C1116M, Type II or III.
•Vapor Barrier - Class A minimum 10mil (250 um) thickness ASTM E1745.

reinforcing bars shall be permitted
> Reinforcing steel bars, anchor bolts or other steel embedments shall not be connected to the
electrical grounding system.
> Conduits, pipes and other items made from aluminum shall not be embedded in structural concrete
unless effectively coated to prevent aluminum-concrete reaction.
