4. Definitions

Hot weather concrete : accelerate the rate of moisture loss or rate of cement hydration of
freshly mixed concrete

Self-consolidating concrete : fresh concrete that can flow and consolidate within formwork under its
own weight.

Mass Concrete : any volume of structural concrete in which a combination of dimensions of the
member being cast.

Sabkha : generally consisting of saturated, loose silty sand posibly clay.

5. General Requirements

•Structural concrete with a minimum dimension equal to or greater than 1200mm should be
considered mass concrete.

•Environmental engineering concrete structures design to store liquids shall be leak tested as per
ACI 350.1

•Cast-in-place structural concrete reinforced with Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars shall comply
with ACI 440.5

6. Quality Control

All testing shall be in accordance with 09-SAMSS-097 (Ready-Mixed Concrete)

7. Materials

•Cementitious Materials
-Portland Cement (ASTM C150/C150M, Type 1 or Type V)
-Fly Ash (ASTM C618, Class F)
-Natural Pozzolan (ASTM C618)
-Cementitious materials shall be tested monthly basis or when changing the source of
materials

•Reinforcement
-shall be deformed steel (ASTM A615/A615M), Grade 20
-coated reinforcements , Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) as per 09-SAMSS-106.
-welded wire reinforcement shall be plain wire as per ASTM A1064/A1064M.
-Tie wire (black annealed wire), 16 gauge (1.29mm) min., coated with epoxy.
-Manufacturing, Fabrication, handling, placement and storage of steel reinforcement
shall in accordance with ACI 318.

•Masonry Unit
-Hollow and soild load-bearing (ASTM C90) for exterior walls.
-Hollow and solid non-load bearing (ASTM C129) for interior walls.
-Minimum Compressive strength of concrete masonry units shall be 13.1 Mpa (1900 psi)
•Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) - ASTM C1116/C1116M, Type II or III.

•Vapor Barrier - Class A minimum 10mil (250 um) thickness ASTM E1745.

8. Design and Execution

b) Saudi Aramco shall be notified before proceeding with repair if the defect is any of the following:

1. Depth is greater than 75 mm at the maximum point and surface area is greater than (100,000 mm²).
2. Depth is greater than ¼ the thickness of the member and greater than 150 mm in any other direction.
3. Reinforcing steel is exposed.
c) Prepackage grouts and pacthing compounds similar to the concrete mix without aggregates.

•Embedded Items

> All sleeves, inserts, anchor bolts, waterstops & other embedded items. Welding of this items to the
reinforcing bars shall be permitted

> Reinforcing steel bars, anchor bolts or other steel embedments shall not be connected to the
electrical grounding system.

> Conduits, pipes and other items made from aluminum shall not be embedded in structural concrete
unless effectively coated to prevent aluminum-concrete reaction.

•Placing of Concrete

> Shall be in accordance with ACI 301-16, ACI 304R

> Should have a recorded pre-placement inspection and authorization to proceed by SA

> Standing water shall be removed

> Re-tempering after concrete is mixed shall not be permitted

> Consolidated by mechanical vibrating equipment

> Slabs shall be placed in alternating panels

> Interval between concrete deliveries, no more than 20 minutes interruption elapse during placement

•Finishing

> Shall be in accordance with ACI 301-16 and ACI 117

> Equipment bases - floated finish


Stairs, steps, ramps & walks - broom finish

•Curing

> Shall be in accordance with ACI 301-16

> Max. total dissolved solids (TDS) in water 1000 parts per million (ppm)

> Water curing shall be continuous - compressive strength has reached 70%
- 7 days

> Saturated burlaps - covered with a plasticized sheet vapor barrier, min. 0.15mm (6mils) thickness

> Curing compound shall not be used on surfaces that shall receive bonded treatments, tiles, paint
or other adhered finishes, epoxy toppings

> For Environmental Engineering Structures - curing minimum of 14 days

•Coating and Protection


> Plasticized Sheet Vapor Barrier - Class A, min. 0.25 mm (10mils) thickness, placed beneath slab on
grade

> Lean Concrete - minimum 50 mm, placed beneath foundations

> All concrete surfaces direct contact with earth - coated with two (2) coats of coal tar or bitumen
coating
- APCS-3 or APCS-10

•Concrete Underground Ducts

> Envelopes shall be colored for communication and electrical ducts

•Sulfur Pits

> Minimum concrete cover -75mm

> High Performance SCC - compressive strength 50MPa


- Slump flow shall be 650mm +/- 80mm

> Curing compounds shall not be used to cure sulfur pit concrete
