20 Assessment Points
Type your answers to the following questions on a separate google doc. You will also try to hit
all 7 parts of your verbal pitch in UNDER TWO MINUTES. (The timer will stop you!)
1. The Problem.
Explain the problem you are out to solve. One actual problem. (This is essentially the Driving
Question) My previous experience with helping the youth in my community for my junior
project combined with my passion for helping others allowed me to branch out to Ka Hale A Ke
Ola Homeless Resource Centers. Children at the KHAKO shelter are in need of clothing, and
that is the problem I am out to solve. In other words, “How can I support and provide clothing
necessities to children living in Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers, while getting my
peers involved?”
2. The Solution.
What is needed to address/fix the problem? One solid solution. (This is essentially your project
idea.) To support the children at the shelter and answer my driving question, Target is stepping in
and is sponsoring my project by donating gift cards and giving discounts on everything I
purchase. The clothing I purchase will be packaged and individually given to each child. To
provide other KCS students with an opportunity to contribute to their community, my goal is to
create a sign-up sheet and find a designated space where, together, we can shop and package the
clothing. Although I am extremely grateful for Target’s generosity, my funds will not be covered
completely, and so I am setting up a GoFundMe.
3. Your Audience.
Who will feel the helpful effects of your project? Who is your project for? My project is geared
towards the sixty children living at Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers, along with
KCS students who are willing to help me.
4. Potential Problems.
What challenges do you foresee and how do you plan to overcome these? One of the biggest
challenges I may face is miscommunication. I am constantly going back and forth between
KHAKO and Target, and so I will need to use my planner and organization skills to avoid
unnecessary challenges. Another potential problem is not raising enough money on top of the
resources given to me by Target. If money becomes an issue, I plan on increasing my
advertisements and pitching in my own money. Additionally, I may have trouble getting accurate
sized clothing for all of the children, but I plan to avoid this by sending out sizing forms and
flyers.
5. Mentors.
What mentors if any will help you reach your goal? Because I plan on making the most
significant impact possible, I have multiple adults acting as my mentors. Karl, the manager of
Target, will be mentoring me on the financial side of my project. Misty, the KHAKO children’s
coordinator will be my mentor during the community aspects of my project. Finally, my mom
will be helping me distribute clothing as well as spread the word about my project.
6. Financial Summary.
What resources are needed to complete your project? How much will it cost? Think money AND
time. Consider materials, locations, permission, etc. From my research, I have found that the
average outfit at target for children will cost me roughly $30.00 without any discounts. The
average cost of an outfit for teenagers will cost me approximately $43.00 without any discounts.
My total estimate of costs is about $2215, but with the Target gift cards and discounts, this
number will be brought down tremendously. I have already received permission from KHAKO
to conduct my project, and I am currently figuring out where at the shelter I will be distributing
the clothing.
What have you already achieved? What are your next steps and goals? What are the important
details from your timeline? As of now, I have gotten in contact with the children’s coordinator at
KHAKO, developed a plan for executing my project, and am currently working on setting up a
GoFundMe. I have also started to make flyers and sign-up sheets for the families at the shelter.
My next steps and important timeline details include sending out my flyers and forms, posting
my GoFundMe, conducting my expert interview, contacting other KCS students to see if they are
willing to contribute to my project, and completing my project proposal.
