Don't Panic Viewing Guide: Instructions: Watch Video But DO NOT Worry About The Worksheet

This viewing guide provides tasks and questions to consider after watching a video by Hans Rosling on global population trends. Key points discussed in the video and questions include: 1) how female education and falling fertility rates are related in Bangladesh; 2) peak child being reached globally in 2000; 3) population distribution changes between now and 2100 with large gains in Africa and declines in Asia; 4) relationship between wealth, fossil fuel use, and environmental sustainability leadership responsibilities of more and less developed countries. The viewing guide assessed understanding of Rosling's overall message that panic is unnecessary and richest countries need to set an example for others on environmental issues.

Don’t Panic Viewing Guide

Instructions: Watch video but DO NOT worry about the worksheet.

Task1: First clip on Bangladesh.

1. How is the provision of female education and falling fertility rates related?
These two are related because today female education it is more taken into account and most
of them are finishing school, so this makes that the fertility rates go down because they are not
going to get married early and they are not going to have like 5 kids with a man.
2. How have female aspirations changed in the video? Give two examples.
Before females didn’t finished or went to school and that is something that through the years
changed and also females before didn’t worked they were just house wife and now they are
able to work as any other man.

Task 2: Second clip on Bangladesh.

3. How many of Hanan's siblings died?

3 of her siblings died

4. Do the parents think that this could have been prevented?

They say that their kid’s death could be prevented if they had money on that moment
and also if there were doctors where they lived.

5. What was the percentage mortality rates for children back when Hanan's parents were young?
In the 80s 1/5 Children died, so it was like 20% of them

6. Why, therefore, did they have many children?

They had many children because if some of them died they will still have children left and also
because they didn’t knew their possible future.

Task 3:
7. What is the situation now in Bangladesh and why has child mortality decreased so dramatically?
Now in Bangladesh they have made a great progress in basic health, especially on child
survival, vaccines, nutrition, hygiene and many more made that the child mortality
decreased considerable.

"In the past, people never lived in ecological balance with nature; they died in ecological balance
with nature" - Hans Rosling 2013

8. What did he mean? - Study the quote above that is taken from the video. What does Hans
Rosling mean by this and can you give an example?
Before people died because of nature, like diseases, bacteria’s and more because on that time
they didn’t had medicines and more things than as we have today.

Task 4: 'PEAK CHILD' & INCREASING POPULATIONS’

9. What is Peak Child & When was it reached?

The peak child was reached on the 2000 and it was that from that year through the end of the
century the child population would not grow anymore, so they already reached the peak.

Task 5: POPULATION DISTRIBUTION & DENSITY

10. How is population distribution likely to change between now and 2100? (Make sure you make
reference to areas that will experience large population gains and those that will see an overall
population decline. Give percentage figures as part of your explanation.)

11. Knowledge Check - What does 1114 & 1145 represent?

Task 6: BIG FAMILIES, POSITIVE GROWTH MOZAMBIQUE

12. Positive Changes- Outline the general levels of healthcare improved in Mozambique since Hans
Rosling worked there 30 years ago?

(one or two ways).

15. Outline how income per day is linked to investments in transportation.

16. What issues does looking at poverty from a ‘developed’ or ‘rich’ point of view pose to those at
the bottom end of the scale?

Task 7: POPULATION GROWTH & ENVIRONMENT: Watch the sequence on fossil fuel usage compared
to population wealth where you will see graphics like below. Read the two quotes to answer the
question below.

View from so-called MDC’s - “Those over there you cannot live like us. You will destroy the planet”

View from so-called LDC’s – “Who are you to tell us that we can’t live like you? You better change first if
you want us to do it differently”.

17. Study the quotes from Hans Rosling taken from the video. Explain the relationship between
wealth, fossil fuel use and taking the lead on environmental sustainability. (Ensure you refer to
future population growth areas and methods of transportation.)

Task 8:

18. Watch the last sequence of the video where Hans Rosling is summing up. Do you share his
opinion that the richest countries need to be setting an example for others to follow? Why or
why not?
“Should We Panic”?
