Three Phase Circuit Formula

This document discusses three-phase circuits and includes formulas, examples, and exercises related to three-phase connections including wye-wye, wye-delta, delta-delta and delta-wye. It covers balanced three-phase voltages, power in balanced systems, and calculating line voltages and currents for different three-phase connection types like wye-wye and delta-wye. Examples demonstrate determining phase sequence, calculating line currents and voltages, and determining real, reactive and complex power for three-phase systems. Exercises provide practice calculating values for given three-phase connections.

Introduction
• The earliest application of AC was electric lamps --> single
phase
• Then a.c motor was developed --> single phase not suitable
• Need 3-phase system
• In general, the generation, transmission and distribution of
electrical power are more efficient using 3-phase system.
• For economic reasons, 3-phase systems are usually designed
to operate in the balanced state.

MM/BEE1143
Example 1
Determine the phase sequence of the set of voltages
Van = 200 cos(ωt + 10 )
Vbn = 200 cos(ωt ), Vcn = 200 cos(ωt )

Solution:
The voltages can be expressed in phasor form as
𝑉 200∠100 𝑉, 𝑉 200∠ 2300 𝑉, 𝑉 200∠ 1100 𝑉

We notice that Van leads Vcn by 120 and Vcn in turn leads Vbn by 120 .

Given that , find Van and Vcn, assuming
positive (abc) sequence.

Answer:

connected to a Y-connected balanced load with an
impedance of 24 + j19 per phase. The line
joining the generator and the load has an
impedance of 0.6 + j0.7 per phase.
