Reflection - BJMP Duties and Functions
REFLECTION PAPER
On the 17th of October year 2020 a seminar with a theme BJMP: Duties and Functions was held
thru online virtual setting. Topics discussed was about how the functions of BJMP and as future
enthusiast, how are we going to prepare ourselves, the trainings needed and the requirements. The
speakers highlighted about becoming a BJMP enthusiast, their duties and its importance. The speakers
were Jsupt. Mary Jane Inopia, JO1 Hope Credo and JO2 Kalayaan V. Dungog.
After every lecture, the speakers ask questions to make sure that the students learn something
and they also entertain some questions. From the questions raised, I have learned that being a BJMP
officer is an engagement of the following core values, integrity and collaboration, teamwork,
commitment and self-discipline. Inside a prison, an officer must do the right thing and adhere to the
rules and regulations mandated inside the prison, formulate policies and guidelines in the
administration of all district, city, and municipal jails nationwide, implement strong security measures
for the control of inmates, provide for the basic needs of inmates, conduct activities for the
development of inmates, improve jail facilities promote the general welfare and development of
personnel.
Although the workplace of the Jail Bureau is confined inside the portals of jail to safeguard
inmates, nonetheless, the Bureau has an inherent function of informing the public of jail operations and
other matters concerning the corrections pillar of the Philippines. Coincidentally, being a new and
growing Bureau, BJMP aims to keep the public abreast of information regarding jail management and
penology. To enhance public safety by ensuring humane safekeeping and development of Persons
Deprived of Liberty (PDL) in all district, city, and municipal jails for their integration to society.
The hardest part in this job is that we have to learn everything and we always work even after
shift, we are always on call whenever they need someone to do a certain job. We visit all the jails to
make sure that the health status of every persons deprived of liberty (pdl) is being monitored and given
proper attention. The most enjoyable part of the job is that we help each other in terms of
accomplishing all the compliance and beating the deadlines despite the difficulty and the amount of
workload. We always secure the perimeter and check the inmates if they are doing something illegal or
trying to escape the vicinity.
Assuring that no inmates will be harmed during our duty. Whether you are an inmate, trainee or
jail officer, respect should there be at all times for both parties and that there should be no kind of
discrimination at all to create an environment that is still safe for everyone. It is good in working this
company because you help a lot of people who are inside the jail to continue their life even though they
are incarcerated, so many livelihood programs been implemented by the bureau in to help them to earn
money while they are inside the jail and to develop their skills and knowledge that they can be used
after serving sentenced or after their liberty.
The bureau of jail management and penology helps us to rehabilitate offenders which they will
learn other alternative way of living and earn discipline on other aspects. The bureau is a good working
place because they implement strict rules and regulation inside.
