Case Study # 4

A 37-year-old male patient was admitted to the burn unit with areas of increased pain, redness, and swelling after a week of treatment. A routine culture and sensitivity test was ordered. Gram stain and biochemical testing of the bacterial colonies isolated from the culture showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was present, as indicated by its characteristic green pigment and distinct odor.

Case Study # 4

A 37-year old male patient is admitted to the burn unit.

After a week of treatment several areas begin to ooze that
have increased pain, redness and swelling. The attending
physician orders a routine culture and sensitivity test. The
appropriate transport media is used for specimen collection
and for inoculation of prescribed media.

Day 1 Culture Readout: Below are the results of the routine culture after overnight in a CO2
incubator at 35 ⁰C .

Isolated colonies are used to

set up biochemical testing
and perform antibiotic
susceptibility testing for
readout the next day.
Gram stain of bacterial colony
Rapid Bacterial colonies from BAP
Oxidase Test isolated on BAP (Oil – 1000x total magnification)
Day 2:

Record the results for the following

biochemical tests (e.g. positive or
negative) in the chart provided.

A green pigment
begins to develop and
the plate has a
distinct odor.

Glucose Citrate TSI

MAC Fermentation
