Module 6a

This document summarizes the preparation of a simple syrup by dissolving 850g of sucrose in purified water to make 1000mL of solution. It then provides computations to determine the amount of sucrose needed to make 30mL of simple syrup. The rest of the document asks and answers questions about syrups. It discusses other preparation methods for syrups, consequences of concentrations that are too high or low, storage requirements, uses of syrups, and examples of 5 commercial syrup products with their generic and brand names and uses.

Laboratory Exercise No. 9

PREPARATION OF SIMPLE SYRUP

OBJECTIVE: To prepare simple syrup by simple solution.

MATERIALS: laboratory set of apparatus, 60 ml amber bottle

PROCEDURE: Prepare 30-ml.

Sucrose 850 g

Purified water, q.s.

To make 1000 ml

COMPUTATION:
850 g 0 25,000
= = =25.5 g
1000 mL 30 mL 1000
QUESTIONS:

1. What are syrups?

Syrups are a viscous concentrated solution of a sugar, such as sucrose, in

water or other aqueous liquid; combined with other ingredients, such a
solution is used as a flavored vehicle for medications.

2. State other methods for the preparation of syrup and give the advantages and
disadvantages on each method.

Other methods for the preparation of syrup are:

1. Agitation without Heat

Advantages:

a. The product has maximum stability.

b. Through placing all ingredients in a vessel larger than the volume of the
syrup than agitation of the mixture.

c. Medication dissolved in the minimum solvent than incorporated into the

syrup

Disadvantages:

a. Time consuming

2. Solution with heat

Advantages:

a. Desired to prepare the syrup as quickly as possible.

b. Can be used for thermostable medications and non-volatile materials.

Disadvantages:

a. When the syrup is greatly overheated, it becomes amber colored as the

sucrose caramelize, sugar inversion may happen.

b. Decomposition by heat, syrup cannot be sterilized by autoclaving.

3. Addition of a medicated liquid

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

4. Percolation

Advantages:
a. Preparation of extractive of the drug and then the preparation of the
syrup.

Disadvantages:

a. Elixirs are clear, sweetened hydroalcoholic solutions intended for oral

use and are usually flavored to enhance their palatability. 10-12%
alcohol self-preserving.

3. Consequences of too concentrated syrups and too diluted syrup.

If the syrup id too much concentrated, a pellicle or crystals will form upon its
surface and it will be a thick liquid, while if it the syrup if too dilute, it will
ferment and be a thin liquid.

4. What is the official storage of syrup?

The official storage of syrups is in a bottle that will protect them against heat
and sunlight. They should be stored in a cool dry place, and once it is opened,
it must be refrigerated only until one (1) month (for simple syrups), and about
six (6) months for rich simple syrups.

5. Uses (3) of syrups.

1. Vehicle for medicine
2. Sweetener
3. Preserving

6. Site (5) commercial products (syrup) available in the market. State the generic and
brand names and its corresponding uses.

1. Generic name: Paracetamol

Brand name: Tempra
Use: Relieves pain and reduces fever
2. Generic name: Ambroxol
Brand name: Ambrolex
Use: Makes the mucus less thick and sticky and easier to cough

3. Generic name: Cefaclor

Brand name: Celor
Use: Treats certain infections caused by bacteria, such
as pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract
infections, and infections of the skin, ears, throat,
tonsils, and urinary tract

4. Generic name: Cefixime

Brand name: Cefivir
Use: Treat certain kinds of bacterial infections

5. Generic name: Cefalexin

Brand name: Zelexin
Use: Used to treat bacterial infections, such as
pneumonia and other chest infections, skin
infections and urinary tract infections
