b) given word clues of opinion statements through a tag cloud;
c) formulated opinions about resolving the current social issues through the utilization of
one’s strengths; and

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Formulating Opinions
Reference: Grade 10 Learner’s Material, pp. 63-64
Materials: Slide presentation for the facilitation of recall questions with a twist
Pictures of sample tag clouds for the students to refer to in doing their own output
Activity sheets for the students to answer on
Improvised mailbox for the storage of letters
III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity

A. Recall
Last meeting, we discussed the literary piece,
“Orpheus”, didn’t we?
Yes, ma’am.
I have here recall questions and at the same time,
hints to answer them. We’ll have it with a twist.

Who is the main character in the literary piece?

ORPHEUS
Who do you think he is?
I think he is a MUSICIAN.
Yes, what made you think that he is a musician?
I knew he is a musician because he has a lyre and
he plays music with it.
That’s right. Do you think this can be categorized as
his strength?
Yes.
Why do you say so?
I believe it is his strength because through playing
songs, he can charm all things, tame wild animals,
and can even win sympathy.
Correct. And who is this woman whom he wooed
and soon became his wife?
EURYDICE
Yes. Do you think Orpheus was madly inlove with
her?
Yes.
Why do you think so?
I can say that he is madly in love with her because
when Eurydice died, he became so lonely that he
started playing sad songs.
That’s right. We have seen his strength through the
power of his music, but when he lost Eurydice he
became different. What now can you say about
Eurydice? She is his _____.
WEAKNESS
You got it. He badly misses her. What then do you
think did he do to overcome his weakness of losing
her? Where did he go?
He went into the UNDERWORLD and there he
struck his lyre and charmed everyone who are there
to stillness.
Excellent. You can see how Orpheus used his
strength to overcome his weakness.

B. Presentation
Now, let us go back to your previous answers.
(The teacher will re-present their answers noted on
the board)
Since we are discussing your views about the
literary piece, what do you think is our lesson for
today based on the hints given?
OPINION
Very good. We shall discuss about the formulation
of opinions.

C. Lesson Proper
Based on your answers in the discussion of the
literary piece awhile back, what do you think is an
opinion?
Opinion is a statement of belief or feeling of what
seems is true.
Correct. Anymore?
Opinion is what someone thinks about a particular
thing.
Yes, that’s right because if you noticed, I was
frequently asking you a while ago what you think
about it.

Task 1: From your previous answers a while back, let us identify the opinion word clues to prove that your
statements are opinion.

(I think he is a musician.)
From this statement, what do you think makes it an
opinion? What opinion word clue is present?
I think
Very good. How about in this statement?
(I knew he is a musician because he has a lyre and
he plays music with it.)
I knew
Yes, you’re right. How about in this next statement?
(I believe it is his strength because through playing
songs, he can charm all things, tame wild animals,
and can even win sympathy.)
I believe
Correct. How about in this last statement?
(I can say that he is madly in love with her because
when Eurydice died, he became so lonely that he
started playing sad songs.)
I can say that
Yes, you are right again.
Now class, what have you noticed with the opinion
word clues?
They are at the beginning of each statement.
Exactly and we call these word clues as introductory
phrases hence, opinions are signaled directly
through these phrases.
Do you know of other introductory phrases of
opinion other than the ones you have identified?
In my opinion
It seems to me that
In my own view
For me
I am confident that
I am convinced that
I feel
From what I know
Excellent. You are now familiar with the clue words
of opinion statements.

Task 2: Now this is the challenge. Find your pair and transform the following sentences taken from the story
into opinion statements by using the word clues.
There were nine goddesses called muses.
Eurydice stepped on a poisonous snake and died.
Orpheus continued to play his lyre tenderly as he made his way through the gloomy underword.
The ghosts cried when they heard his sad music.
Orpheus turned to make sure that he was still following him.
Are you done?
Yes, ma’am.
Exchange your papers to the other pairs and we’ll
check them.
(Students will check their papers as the teacher will
facilitate the discussion of answers.)

Now that you were able to transform the sentences

into opinion statements, I know you are now ready
to formulate your own statements of opinion.

Task 3: Write opinions as to how can you help resolve the current social issues through your strengths and
abilities.
(See Appendix B for the worksheet)

Are you done?

Yes, ma’am.
Please have a representative from each group to
present your answers in front.
(The representatives from each group will present.)
Very good. It seems that you really are concerned
citizens of our country and your opinions justify it.

Now, what have you realized in doing the activity?

We have learned that we have the strengths to help
our country develop.
Yes, of course you have. However, no one can deny
that you also have weaknesses.

Task 4a: Write a letter to yourself which you are only to open 20 years from now. Highlight in your letter
how you are able to capitalize your strengths to be a better person that you have become in 20 years
ahead of our time. Use statements expressing opinions in your letter.

(See Appendix B for the criteria)

Are you done?

Yes, ma’am.
